I was talking to a firearms instructor the other day and he said that no ammunition manufacturer ever made a pointed bullet for tube fed 30-30 rifles. He was certain they never ever made any I didn't agree with him. Also said that the 25 round mags made for the Ruger 10/22 were illegal even if blocked.

Only one would be the fancy flex tip ammo. The only successful traditional style pointed tip round in a tube magazine was 8mm Lebel, and that is solely because of the taper and the groove cut into the base to catch the point. Otherwise you are just risking detonation for no good reason.
Remember Firearms Instructors are like the guys you meet behind the gun store counters, they maybe knowledgeable, but more times than not they aren't. Another thing to consider is you can't know everything. I know a fair bit about milsurps (always more to learn, but I have a good general grasp), I couldn't tell you much about black rifles, hunting rifles, shotguns, modern pistols and revolvers, or rimfires. Its all about knowing when to say you don't know. That is the difference between someone you can use as a expert or someone that spews nonsense.

What he said was actually true up until leverevolution tip bullets though. Maybe he hasn't followed 30-30 bullet progression in the last 20 years.
I'm amused that you would disagree with him, while not actually knowing the answer yourself.

A prohibited device in terms of a magazine is any magazine that can be loaded with more than what the proscribed amount for that type of magazine is. If you pinned a 25rd Ruger 10/22 magazine to 10rds, it would return to the same legal classification as a standard magazine.
Educate yourself.
I thought I was correct about the pointed 30-30 rounds but thought maybe they were dropped.
I haven't hunted in a few years due to medical issues and heard about them from a young guy that was at the same hunting camp.
I questioned the instructor about blocking the mags and he said it didn't matter they were illegal.
He also works for Cabalas and has a "know it all" streak in him.
I also had to correct him about prohibited status, he said they couldn't go anywhere if you died except the RCMP for destruction.
I have a feeling he is retired police officer.
I have a friend a Sgt. in another police force, he told me they never received anything about the 10/22 high capacity mags being prohibited.

Military ball was made for the 30-30 during WW2 but it was round nose. The closest, as mentioned, is leverlution (sic) which uses nylon to create a tip that mimics pointed FMJ ballistics but does not detonate primers in tubes.
Handloading is the best option for pointed bullet. In a lever you should never load more than 2 at a time. One in the pipe and one in the tubular magazine to prevent chain firing ie bullet noses detonating primers from recoil................Harold
