Did the Canadian Army in 1945 capture any Arms Factories
prior to the end of the war or after?

You see a lot of pictures of American GI's in the Walther and Mauser Factories holding Mkb42's, G43's and K98's, etc. Just don't recall any Canadian pics.

What was the story with FN in Herstal, Belgium, who made it there first?

Herstal is in the Belgian province of Liege. It's on the eastern side of Belgium not far from the German border. That was a British sector. However, in 1945, Belgium had been liberated for months. Our troopies were in Holland.
The FN plant was likely bombed flat too.

Mauser Oberndorf was in the American sector, They skipped Berlin to the Russians and headed central south east... they went for all the cool stuff, ie, mauser factory, the disney castle, eagles nest etc.. While they were looking for gold and lost paintings etc, the Canadian were getting drunk and fancying the ladies in Holland.

We were'nt interested in weapons factories, if you know what I mean. WOMEN AND BOOZE, JUST WHAT A FIGHTING SOLDIER NEEDS...:runaway:

I actually toured the Mauser Oberndorf factory in southern Germany, IT IS A VERY INTERESTING PLACE INDEED. If you ever get a chance to go be sure to check it out. And the HK factory is just up the hill.

viv la deutchland..

:D beer and Canadian troops.

I forget the quote but its attributed to a WW1 Brit General later in the war, it went along the lines of if you want to take an objective and have Canadian troops don't give them any alcohol for a few days and then tell them the germans have a brewery 2 miles behind their lines :D

Beer and any colional troops!!

I heard one story about the Kiwis and Monty. Apparently he was foowing them in convoy and they were hanging over the tailgate offering him bottles of wine! When he mentioned this to General Freyberg, the Commander of the NZEF, he asked if Gen. Montgomery had tried the wine from the water tanker that his soldiers had filled!:D

Monty also commented once to Freyberg "Your soldiers don't salute much,do they?"
Freyberg replied, "No, but if you wave to them, they will always wave back."!

Dutch Girls

I can attest that those Dutch girls still like Canadian troopies, and must say that I felt very flattered when attending WW2 victory celebrations in uniform 12 yrs ago.But Polar Guy needs a wardrobe adjustment if he has any hopes of getting lucky. That white one looks, well maybe, just a liiittle bit too teutonic.
