Did I mount my scope wrong?

So, just recently mounted my first ever scope. It is a Bushnell elite 3-9x40 on a Rem 700 AAC-SD, in a pair of leupold low rings. I was using one of the Bushnell bore sighters, and in order to get the crosshairs centered on the boresighter I needed to adjust the windage almost all the way to the left.
That seems like it is not right, as I would imagine you are supposed to have more or less equal amount of movement available on both sides.

The scope sits about as low as it can be without touching the barrel or hitting the bolt knob, I can't get the scope covers on, which I suppose could be a good thing since my stock doesn't have a cheek riser.

I more or less eyeballed the front ring when twisting the dovetail into place with a screwdriver for leverage, but I made sure the scope sat easily and rotated without any obvious pressure points. If the front ring is not quite centered at 12 o clock, would that be what's causing the scope to point so far to the right?

It could also be that I have no idea how to use the boresighter, maybe it was aligned wrong or something.

I'd imagine there's probably a dozen potential causes, but does anyone have a suggestion that immediately comes to mind?

In any case, I'm going to go do a test fire this weekend to see if it's even on paper. Wouldn't surprise me much if I was using the boresighter wrong.

Yes, I could go get this mounted properly, I even have a waiver on the labor cost for P&D, but I would like to learn how to do this stuff myself.

If it is the laser collet boresighter, rotate it to see if the red dot stays in the same place. If it does, some kind of shimming would be in order, since you may have to adjust at the range.

Take your rifle and remove the bolt.
Set your rifle on something that will hold it steady without you touching it.
Point rifle at a distant object. Can be a door knob at the end of a hallway.
Center distant object while looking through the barrel.
Without moving the rifle, adjust cross hairs to line up on distant object.

Can be done at the range with further distances with better results.

Start shooting your sight in at 50 yards. Should get you close enough to start working while on paper.

Many boresighters are way off target. If you have only bolt action rifles, do your bore sighting this way and return the bore sight. Use the cash to buy another box of shells. Shoot and enjoy!

I use a cardboard box like Shooter says. No fancy stuff. I cut a v in the end of the box for the barrel and then for the stock, line up the bore on the target at 25 meters/yards, and then adjust the scope reticule to line up on the target. Saves alot of screwing around if you don't have a big piece of paper to see where the heck the bullet is hitting.

Leupold Base? The screws at the back can move the scope from side to side (windage) If you are all the way to the right, loosen the left screw and tighten the right one to bring it into alingment.

I had forgotten about that. That's probably it.

I do almost exactly the same thing, but I point the gun at a mirror, maybe 15 meters away (as far away as I can get inside the house...), and I put a tiny Coast keychain LED flashlight into the chamber area:

it's about 2" long, and maybe 1/4" in diameter . Then i just look through the scope & adjust the crosshairs to the bright light-spot in the mirror. Works great every time.:)

At sksr Great ideal - Thanks for sharing.
