My dad came up for a visit and brought up his Ruger 10/22 for me to do some work on for him.

this is what we have.
1991 Ruger 10/22 Stainless Steel on Boyd Thumb hole stock running a stainless bull barrel.
the guts of the gun are all stock so that is what we are working on today.

so this is what i unpacked from the bag of stuff he wanted put in it;

and he's never cleaned it so this was also in the bag

so ripped the gun apart and gave it a hard cleaning with the G96 gunk remover.
then cleaned it up and oiled with the G96 Gun Conditioner.

since the stock was right there i popped out the stock ruger take down screw and put in the Dlask Hex Head Take Down Screw.
on a related note why do the Americans use flat headed screws on stuff like this?
dont they like the finish on the wood and metal?
i think every time i take off a flat head screw i always fly off it and take off some paint from somewhere.

then moved on and took off the trigger group.
replaced the rubber buffer tube with a Kidd one, the one with the rubber sleeve with the metal inner.
those are SoooOooOoOoOooo nice if you take your gun apart on a regular basis.
worth their weight in gold.

next totally gutted the trigger group and put in the VQ HP Action Kit, Auto Bolt Release and Strut.

reassembled the gun and its super nice now.
tested the trigger with the trigger pull gauge and its 2.3lbs.
set the set screw to a hair behind the break and its perfect.

i polished up his bolt for him and told him he should pick up a Kidd Bolt and charging handle, he said maybe later.
gun is super nice.

total investment for the day;
VQ HP Action Kit $147
VQ Strut $9
VQ Auto Bolt Release $14
Kidd Buffer Bolt $6.95
Dlask Take Down Screw $4.99
Total = $182

23 year old gun running better then new = Priceless

Great son! I did the bolt release mod on mine. Cheaped out. If you havent shot it yet. The new buffer is a huge improvement.
Have fun shooting!
Just wondering how bad it was for your Father at the boarder with the gun?

i love those Kidd Buffers, i run them in all 4 of my 10/22's
i went from the stock metal ones to the rubber pins a couple years ago but got tired of having to wrestle the rubber ones in every time i wanted to clean my gun.
so when i saw those Kidd ones last year i picked up a bunch for my guns.
LOVE them.
so much easier to just slide that little metal pin out then take the rubber tube out.
ill never go back to the rubber ones or the metal ones for that matter.

Wow, what a nice looking rifle and what a great project. You are lucky to have a Dad like that! Enjoy

i think since im the one that did all the work on it for him and cleaned that dirty girl for him hes lucky to have a son like me!
hahahahaha

no, he knows that 10/22's are my fetish and im constantly tinkering with them.
it was a lot easier for me to rip his apart and do all the mods, took me maybe 5 minutes from start to finish.
for him since he's never done it it would have been a lot longer, so it just made sense that he would have me do it for him.

i was teasing him too, he runs the right thumbhole stock on his and im a left handed shooter, so i was mentioning to him that id have to use my saw and dremel and bore out the thumb hole when i inherit the gun off him to make it left handed friendly.
