I installed a VQ targer hammer in my Rem. 597 last night and at the end wasn't sure it was worth the $32 and an hour of bed time (I installed it wrong at first lol) When I tried the trigger after the instalation I thought I installed the old hammer back. didn't feel much of a difference! WTH? I guess i'll have to take to the range and fire off couple hundred rounds but it doesn't feel like 3-4lbs to me...

did it make a differece for you?

Mine made quite a bit of difference, all the creep and crunchy-ness is gone and I shot smaller groups after the install. My old trigger must have been around 7lb (my pull gauge goes to 6lb so I had to guess) my trigger now is around 50oz with no creep.

Since you have two hammers you can allow yourself a little bit of experimentation. Take a fine file and go bananas. As long as hammer latches and doesn't go full auto you are ok.

full auto eh? :)

Made it to the range yesterday and had a chance to try the gun out with the VQ hammer. I think it is a little better now. Maybe it will still get better with use?

Well I went at my old hammer with the files, emery cloth and polishing compound tonight. I lessened the angle of the ramp that meets the sear and then I knocked down some of the height. Took about an hour and 20 or so fittings but the pull is down to about 2 pounds with NO CREEP. The angle lessens the weight and the height controls the creep. The hammer seems solid while cocked with no indication of tripping. Once the gun was back together, I cocked it and gave the stock a bump on the floor and it didn't trip. Have to take it out this weekend and try it. I'll keep ya posted.

If the VQ hammer I got is any indication of how the rest are, I wouldn't buy another.

FWIW I took both hammers to the post office this afternoon and had them weighed and they are identical in that respect.
