did you get hurt while shooting "the big 'uns"?

following another thread, I'd like to know how many of you got hurt shooting big bores.
Flinching is just one side of shooting big bullets.
If a release trigger would come as an alternative, would you take it?

Makes you appreciate how little other calibers actually recoil!!

I would'nt ever say it actually hurts to shoot any of my rifles. I have a few that you know are going to smack you but I am 6'2" and about 235 lbs so I smack back.
The heavy hitters in my safe are 7mm rem mag, 300WSM, 300 ultra mag, 338 win mag, and 375 H&H.

I'm not a really big guy, but I can take my share of recoil. That being said, an unbraked 378 Weatherby definitely got my attention at the range, and I would not shoot one of those any amount without taking measures to reduce the recoil. I still prefer rifles in the 300 Mag class and down, but find the 338 and 375 tolerable as long as it's not in too large doses at one time. Regards, Eagleye.
 
I have had some BB & the worse one is the 458 WM Ruger #1 with full house 500gr. loads. My Son is over 300lbs :) & he would not shoot it.DAN>>>
 
Slug-guns hurt more than most big-bore rifles... 3.5 Turkey loads are the worst... my right shoulder is toast and will dislocate when shooting slugs and heavy 3.5s... I try not to let my buddies see me cry.

I have the same beast. I found it a tab rammy until I replaced the recoil pad with a Decellerator. Now it's almost pleasant to shoot off the bench. It's no 9 pound 223, but it's not so bad even with 500 grainers. I still have to replace the pad on my Rigby as well. That's a project for one of these dark evenings.
 
300 wm is as big as i go.in a bar w/180's is as heavy as i can handle as i have osteoarthritis!but the roar and results while big game hunting makes it all worth it!
 
biggest i shoot is a 300 or 444 with 300grn handloads. after a range sesion with the 444 my 308 feels like a 22. i don't mind the recoil sometimes its kinda fun. i think the hard hitters make you shoot the light stuff better.
 
I have tried to work my way through most of the magnums (7 mm Rem, 7 mm Wby, .270 Wby, .300 Win, .300 H&H, .308 Norma, .338 Win Mag, .338-378 KT, .30-378 Wby, .350 Rem Mag, .375 H&H, .458 Win Mag, probably others that I do not remember)

The only one that REALLY hurt me was a Ruger 77 Mark I in .458 Win Mag, with very hot hand-loads pushing about a half-pound lead bullet (OK it was probably only about 500 grains, but you know what I mean...) I shot one round from the hip to see what I thought, then three rounds from the shoulder. It was like going three rounds with George Chuvalo. I am not man enough for that cartridge..........and BTW the fellow who got that rifle scoped it and opened his skull up like a tomato!

I agree with BIGREDD about full power loads in a 12 gauge, they are just plain nasty - especially slugs in rifled barrels.

My brother in law was out from T.O. over the holidays and wanted to try shooting, 37 never shot before. Went from .22 up to 375hh and finished busting clays with the 12 ga. He shot way more than I thought he should but I'll never stop a keener. Next day his right shoulder was black and purple and really sore but he had a big big smile and was looking forward to showing off to his girlfriend and buddies back home.
 
Biggest hitter I have right now is my 71/2 lb 358 Norma,have a 45/70 in a Ruger #1.It get your attention with fullhouse loads.Others are my 9.3x62 and 300 ultra mag.Have owned a 458 win mag 18 1/2 in barrel and iron sights just ugly to shoot.and I had a 450 Ackley Mag.That for sure was the heaviest recoil.
 
first time I loaned my .338 to abudy he got three stiches over the eye for it..... try to tell them not to lean over the rifle like that but they don;t believe you.

never been hurt by a big bore, but used to shoot trap on vancouver islan and 500-1000 rnds of 12 guage sure gets you tired by the end of the day.
 
I had a Spanish made side by side and with 3" magnums the recoil would be a bugger.
One worse was a guy sawed off a single shot 12 guage(to legal length) as a bear defence gun.
 
My hardest kicker is a savage 210f in 12 ga.(And I love it:D )
Makes the recoil of my 300 wsm and 7mm Rem Mag feel much lighter and easier to shoot. Its helped me shoot alot better:) .
 
My shoulder is such that I am not able to handle much recoil at all these days without physical nerve damage , so I stay away from anything with more recoil than a good trap gun with 2 3/4 dram s and 1oz. loads.
My 45/70 and 40/65 highwalls are loaded with shot in the buttstocks, and my
.577 Snider fits me well enough that it is not a huge kicker.
I use a past recoil shiled always, and almost all my rifles have limbsaver pads or decellerators on them.

I miss shooting the .375 H&H, and the hot smokeless 45/70, and stuff like the 338 Lapua, but not enough to smash myself up !:rolleyes:

Recoil doesn't bother me too much.Heaviest recoil I've experianced is slugs in a 12 guage,I've never tried any of the really big bore rifle's like the 458's though.That being said I can't see myself shooting off a box of slugs in one outing lol
 
Holeeeeeeeeey! way t'go dumbdawg, gives the young lad some well earned bragging rights and a little extra shot of self confidence.
