Dies for progressive

I just bought a Dilion 550B, I am going to start with 45ACP and 223, I plan to keep reloading all my other calipers with a single stage.

I'm looking on suggestions on what dies to get. I have heard that people say that some dies are better than others when used for high volume reloading. The 223 will be getting shot in a XCR and a AR so I'm not looking for redding type S or something like that unless that is the way to go.

I dont mind spending money for quality.

For .223 I'd consider getting the Dillon Carbide dies.

They will last forever and you will be wanting small base dies for those rifles.

They still need lube, but a little goes a long way.
 
I load both those on my Dillon. I use Lee carbide for 223 and RCBS carbide in most pistol calibers, although some are Lee.

The Lee decapping pin/rod is strong, so when you hot the occasional Berdan case, it usually survives. RCBS does not.
 
I love the Dillon dies for pistol calibers. Seem to work better than the RCBS in my 550. I don't have Dillon rifle dies, so I can't comment on them, but a small base sizer is a good idea.

I believe P&D carry Dillon, and I think TSE might as well. Further afield from your ZIP is CFRAM and Custom Reloading.

Dillon don't have a large dealer mark-up. They used to be strictly mail order. The freight and brokerage charges combined with the low mark up make it almost a loss leader for dealers up here.

Yes, but unless the semis have tight chambers, they should not need to have ammo loaded with SB dies. My AR-15 for example, has a fairly sloppy chamber (as is entirely correct and appropriate for that sort of rifle).

Unless one of the OP's rifles has a tight-bodied "match" chamber (which would usually be a mistake), ammo loaded with regular full-length sizing dies really ought to work perfectly well.

Not to highjack this thread, but I thought AR's are supposed to have a tight chamber (as my Stag apparently did) and thus required full length sizing always?
And Yes, call Custom reloading, I got all my Dillon stuff from them. A++

My reason for going with the small base dies and full length sizing was simple insurance.

If you are loading for one rifle only, or can ensure you will never have stray brass in your rifle, I'm sure you could load with just neck sizing as long as you can bump the shoulder down a wee bit.

As I could never be certain of getting only my own brass back, it made sense to use the small base dies. They overwork the brass so longevity is lost, but the odds are I'd lose a case before wearing it out.
