Dieseling(?) (ALOX Smoke)

On firing some handloads, with 124gn cast lead bullets, lubed with Lee Liquid ALOX, my first impression was:

"Holy Sh*t, I thought I'd used smokeless powder."

The rounds gave off what I'd consider an unreasonable amount of smoke. If I were using these for IPSC/IDPA, it would really mess with your sight picture. Aside from using a different lube (which I will likely do), are there any ways I can cut down on the smoke from ALOX'ed bullets?

You're not the only one to find it smoky. Sometimes it is the result of using too much Alox when tumble lubing. Less is more. Sometimes not. Some people mix their own version up with Alox, Johnsons Paste Wax and some other stuff. The Cast Boolits forum has a lot of info on this. There are also some members on this forum who do it too.

I like to cut my Lee Liquid Alox 50/50 with mineral spirits (turpentine). I only use a very light coating on the bullets. I'm using this method for .45 ACP and .38 Special (and +P), so YMMV.

HA HA HA... I was thinking the same thing. I recently loaded and shot some .38sp and 9mm cast with two coats of Alox one before sizing and the other after per the directions. To add to that, Ioaded with Bullseye which I find is a smokey powder.

I have started to cut my alox as well and see how that goes.
