difference between a Rem 700 and 770

He wasn't speaking about accuracy, only longevity.

Perhaps you should ask the many, many target shooters that choose to use button rifled barrels. They wouldn't waste the time and money to use barrels that have a significantly shorter barrel life. I doubt that the rep had any actual background in metallurgy, or in gunsmithing, to make such a silly statement.

And I wasnt siding with one method over the other. I was just surprised that the booth-dude brought up that the new gun had what he considered a shorter barrel life.

He obviously doesn't have a clue! Unbelievable that a rep would actually say that, however it was at the Remington booth. Guess we should not be too surprised.

They have sure slid a long ways down the slope. I resisted believing that for several years, but obviously it's more than just quality control that needs to be addressed.

710's and 770's take a beating on sites like this, but I've only ever known two people in real life who owned them and they were both very satisfied. For a typical light user/occaisional hunter, they are probably fine.

Two of the 3 I've seen have had the bolt handles fall off; that can happen to other rifles as well, but when it happens to them its worth welding the bolt handle back on. If the OP is getting reasonable service from his rifle, and only wishes to restock it, there are a few gunsmiths around with stock replicating machines. Trace Stock Duplicating comes to mind, 780-855-2291.

If it was up to me, I'd cut my losses, keep that rifle for back up duty, and get a nice wood stocked rifle, perhaps one of the Husqvarnas from Tradex on the link above. They have plenty to choose from, and many would be less expensive then a custom wood stock. Check out the commercial 1600 series of rifles.

Holy crap.... I got the damn thing for $200 with 3 boxes of ammo... I sure as hell won't complain about it... it shoots a decent enough group . Im confident in it enough to take it to the bush.... Sorry I have a piece of :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug: gun.... I just wanted to put a nicer stock on it....

"Quit while you are ahead." I don't mean quit owning/using that particular gun, sounds like you got a pretty good $200 rifle. But if you start throwing money at it you could easily turn it into a $400 or $600 rifle that isn't any better.

Think positively: wanting to have a nicer stock means you need to add another gun to your collection. Would you like a .270Winchester? I saw Cabelas.ca had the Stevens 200 on sale at $299.99 yesterday, but only in .270Win. That is a good rifle, especially at that price, with an old Savage action that is common and well catered for in the aftermarket.

Point taken... put the money to something better. I knew it was a low end rifle, but it does the trick (but yes, its not very appealing to the eye) hence the whole stock replacement idea. When I think about it now, The cost of a stock + whatever I sell the 770 for + a few more bucks = better rifle.......... maybe one that wont be so looked down on:p... Im gonna look up the above mentioned for fun....

Best thing to do is knock as many animals down as you're allowed, and make sure to get a picture of your 770 sitting atop of them then post on this thread. =]
