Hey Everyone,
Im new to reloading and was just wondering if anyone could answer this question for me, what is the difference between Vihtavuori N320 and N340?
Im going to be loading S&W 40 and Luger 9mm. Someone with a great amount of experience uses and told me to use N320. I have the Lyman 49th edition Reloading guide and it shows N340 for the 9 and 40 loads, I was just wondering why?

I apologize if this is a stupid question, I just want to understand haha.

Thanks

Yeah the 40. what i will be using the most, I guess what i show have thrown in there is can i go by the N340 specs in the loading manual with the N320 powder? Or is that a no no?

Thanks for the quick answer tho.

Um, NO. Use the loading data for the powder you are using.

N320 is faster burning, so it works better for lighter loads. N340 is slower burning, so you can get more velocity with lower pressures, but you need more of it to achieve the same velocities.

N320 is generally prefered for 9 and 40 over N340, except where your needed velocity is greater than you can achieve with safety using N320.

Fast powder with heavier projectiles has soft perceive recoil, if your looking for load with a certain power factor, then N320 is the better choice. I use N320 for 45,9mm and 40sw for my standard bbl gun (no ports). N340 is medium burning rate, if your up to velocity, then n340 is an option, or you can even go to 3N37,N350. But remember that a slower powder with heavy projectiles will have a heavier recoil, faster powder with light projectile is a snappier.

"...N340 specs in the loading manual with the N320 powder..." Absolutely not.

X2, especially with VV powders, stick to the loading manual and get a chrono, no fooling around...
