Hey all, is there much of a difference between the French Tickler models vs other late Chinese models? Specifically the spike bayonet, wooden upper hand guard models?

Get either or, whichever is cheaper. They are functionally the same. Both are chrome lined, both are unissued and in pristine enough shape. I prefer a blade bayonet for the esthetics. Its an sks, its simple, hardy, and goes boom when you pull the trigger. I wouldn't do what many have done (myself included) and Bubba it up trying to modernize it, as it loses reliability when tampered with.

"French Tickler" refers to its textured bakelite upper handguard (gas tube cover).

Otherwise it's just a sparkling SKS.

There are zero functional differences, just get the newest/best condition one.

When it comes to the Chinese SKS, the most important things are condition, and getting a threaded barrel version (not pinned) is generally thought to be a better choice. Factory 26 has the best reputation for consistent manufacture, but I think that’s overblown a bit.

The newer so-called "French Tickler" Type 56 carbine has never been issued. After production in 1978-80 it was preserved with some Chinese cosmoline and put into strategic storage. After some 45 years it's like a brand new rifle. All the other Chinese Type 56's were issued and some of them are crappy beaters. And the "French Tickler's" barrel is threaded not pinned. I've had one for a few years and I'm very happy with it. Pretty accurate carbine. Unfortunately, the prices of the "Ticklers"are now quite high.

I've always liked the look of the 'French Tickler' handguards. They seem to handle the heat a lot better during long range sessions compared to the standard wood ones.

What're they going for these days? I could google it, I suppose, but it's easier to ask you lol

The French trickler is like brand sparking new, It feels like when you open a box of new rifle, Lol. That's pretty much about it. Get one or two if you could. I like it so much so as my other Chinese, Lol.

I think they were around 500 when they first came in (the French ticker batch). Price hikes are I think taking advantage of the last of usable semis in Canada now.
