Difference in #4 and #1 bolts?

That is without a doubt the best question I've ever seen here. The bolt head would be first, if there is one. You're right, though, it is the lug and I opened my safe and looked to be sure. The No. 4's has a groove, the No. 1's doesn't.

Unless I'm missing something, the two illustrations are exactly the same, the parts list are the same (one is missing the extractor spring), and the teardown instructions are the same.

I've got what I assume is a #4 bolt, but the bolt head does not appear to be numbered.
Oops, just looked closer and it does have a very faint "1" that is full of paint. So it appears that the milled bolt lug does distinguish a #4 bolt.

sorry dude.
I don't mean to be a putz but the difference is very clear but damned if i can explain it clear:redface:

the most obivious is the bolt head they are both very distinctive.

more info
i got my two out and the differences are
-the bolt heads the profile of the SMLE is bigger
-the cocking piece can be different origionally the SMLE had a round one
-the angle of the bolt lever is a little different and the bolt knob
- widths are slightley different they are not interchangable ........one is too wide and;
there is a groove in the bottom of the no 4 bolt
i think thats it

Thanks a bunch.
I found a picture of a #1 bolt head and I see what you mean - once you compare the two, there is no mistaking it.
You don't mention the milled groove in the bolt lug - not sure if it is a reliable indicator or not.
