I have been doing research and reading the threads on pistols in preparation for purchasing a handgun in the nxt few months. One comment that appears occassionally is that the handgun had to be modified to meet the IPSC or IDPA. While I do not have a specific goal in mind regarding either of these "disciplines" I would prefer to make my decision on which handgun to buy with some knowledge about the use of my shortlist of handguns in both of these.
These are the handguns I am seriously considering and will make my choice only after having at least handled them. (all will be in 9mm)

CZ85B
Browning Hi Power MKIII
Beretta 92FS Vertec

So three questions:
1. What is the difference between IDPA and IPSC?
2. Can each of the above handguns be used in both?
3. What changes would have to be made to each to shoot both?

I can't speak for IDPA.. but for IPSC.. Nope, Nope, and Nope..

IPSC has a production division which is targeted at "off the shelf" pistols compeating against similiar models etc.. all you need is a holster and mag holders.

before you pick a pistol for IPSC, if you want to shoot production then there is an "approved list".. if the pistol is not on that list.. you can still use it, but you will be in standard class, which will be compeating against guys with more capable guns. (modification are allowed, but not forced..)

in production there are a lot of "you are not allowed" to do rules, and very few "you are allowed to do" rules.. See the IPSC rules FAQ's for exacts..

Good luck.
