I don't know much about the M&P. I heard that there are two generations. If that's true, what are the differences between gen 1 and gen 2?

There are actually 3 generations of sear block, 2 generations of grip frame, 4 generations of barrel and at least 3 generations of magazine.

3 sear blocks - small pin and spring, large pin and spring, and the current redesigned 'one size fits all' block
2 grip frames - with and without ability to mount a thumb safety
4 barrels - original, redesigned at the breach, redesigned again to slow unlocking and redesigned with changed twist rate
3 generations of mags - black, grey, and grey with calibre marked follower.
2 generations of ejector exist too
3 generations of striker, newest being the stainless ones

This is all AFTER the "letter series" guns, which have a letter marked inside the dust cover (the last letter used was 'H') - more 'modern' guns have a series of dots in the dust cover.

I would like to know what vintage of M&P9 I have. I bought it used.

Marked "Stainless"

Has 3 dots stamped inside slide.

Sr # is DSR75XX

If I want to get an Apex trigger kit for it, does the vintage matter? I think so.

Excellent synopsis.

There are no clear generations of M&P pistols, unfortunately. S&W has sort of continuously modified them since their introduction. It makes it very difficult to determine how old a used M&P is. For the most part, all parts are compatible with the major exception being those with the old style of sear housing block.

You'll need at least the Gen 2, current or Apex sear incl in their kits to do this if you have a frame with the cut outs. The thumb safety is relatively cheap, $12-$15 U.S. It's finding them in Can that's hard.

As far as the Apex sear kit goes, those parts - the sear, and firing pin block - have not changed. You might have to re-use your sear spring if you have a really old gun like mine, but no one who's fired my gun has ever complained about the trigger.

Ah, my mistake I was thinking the Apex RAM. Which needs an upgrade of the sear block housing.
