I want to try my hand at chambering and rebarreling my rem 700. from what i understand im pretty much stock with my .223 size boltface. What other options do i have to spit nice heavy bullets as flat as possible? I'm open to anything fairly common even a wildcat with easily formed brass. My first idea was a 7 twist 223 AI. but then we started talking about .25x45 and other necked up .223 brass and that seemed pretty cool too. I seen somewhere something about a 90 ish grain .257 at, or close to 3000 fps... I like the sounds of that or even a .243 at that speed or better would be nice too! discuss!

Ive other thought about doing a 20 tactical but that would be necking down not up. I think hodgdon has some data for a 6-223 with 100gr bullets at about 2500 fps and 60gr at around 3100 fps

There are a fair number of rounds based on it, including Whispers, AAC, 338 straight etc. Grab a copy of Cartridges of the World and flip through it. The 300AAC/Blackout is one of the easiest ones.

As far as a wildcat cartridge goes, a 6x45mm is as easy as it gets. A simple pass through an expanding die and your done. Lots of great bullet choices as well and it'll have more velocity than a .223 with comparable bullet weights.

I was considering a 6mm Whisper (6x221 FB), however, brass isn't easy to come by nor is it cheap. Unless of course you don't mind making your own from .223 brass.

I have a barrel and die setup for the 6x38 that I built if you are interested. Basically an elongated 6mm Whisper. I just haven't had the time to play with it recently. I have a bunch of brass and some load data to go along with it. I'll sell it to you cheap.

I am shooting a 6mmTCU.
I just use the TCU dies to neck the case up. The Redding dies come with a tapered expander ball just for this function.
This little round is pretty impressive! I have taken coyofes, deer, gophers. Its accurate for sure! I have shot MOA groups out to 600 so far.
All this on a T/C Contender carbine platform. 21" heavy barrel.

Any of the 6mm variants on the 223 case will perform well in a bolt rifle.

Have fun with what ever you choose!

Years ago I had PO Ackley barrel up a Rem 600 to a 25 on the 222 Magnum case. It was quite a cartridge: accurate, negligible recoil, and killed sheep and caribou with aplomb. Basically, it was 250 Savage factory performance.

The same has been done on the readily available 223 case.

"...want to try my hand at..." What kind of tools/equipment and experience do you have?
"...pretty much stuck with..." More about the receiver and mag length. Bolts can be changed, but not that length.
"...What other options..." There are some 6.5 cartidges.
"...on the 222 Magnum case..." That'd be where the .223 Rem came from. Anything built on it will be basically the same thing. Give some of those old time guys a thimble and they'd make a new cartridge.
Others are these I swiped from another forum.
223 AI
6mm TCU
25 TCU
6.5 TCU
7mm TCU
.338-223 Straight
6x45
7.62x40
300BO
6.5 PCC
6.8 PCC
.25/223
.300 Whisper.
30/221 Fireball
.20 tactical
.20 practical

Well if you want to get persnickety there are a bunch of others you missed. :D

17 Rem
17 Fireball
20 Vartarg

Then there are the AI variants of most of the above. I have a 20 Vartarg AI reamer waiting for me to do something with it. Gonna make me a 20 cal gopher killer one of these days. ;)

FWIW the 300 Whisper, 300-221 and 300 BO are all essentially the same case. There may be minor differences but those are MINOR.

20 practical with a fast twist shooting 55gr berger would be an awesome round. 20practical brass is easy to form too.

I 'm not looking at going under 22 cal just too tiny imo under that. I think i will keep it fairly simple and go with a .223 AI, a bit different but still somewhat common, also since here in NS and back home in NB There is a under .23 cal restriction on some times of the year i will stay with 22. Later down the road maybe ill build something bigger but for now 7" twist 223 AI is in the lead. As for equipement tools and experience, I work in the aircraft industry and build parts/fix airplanes for the last 8 yrs. I might have machined a couple of things during that time.. I never chambered/threaded a barrel however but its done by poeple. Im doing my research now and will take my time when its actualy time to make steel chips. I like projects and learning, this is a great way to do just that. Blanks are 28" i have a couple of shots at it before i end up with a un-usable barrel lenght! ;) thanks for all the suggestions and comments
