Different method of covering your muzzle

When I am storing my Rifles I usually put a disposable foam earplug in the bore to prevent getting dust or any debris in there. I was toying with the idea of using this instead of tape when I am hunting. It shouldnt influence the pressures much, but seeing as even a little bit of snow can spike pressures I was just wondering what your opinions were.

I wouldn't want to pull the trigger on anything stuck or jammed inside. Tape or the little muzzle cover (condoms) will blow off when fired.
 
???????????????Dust and debris when stored??? That puzzles me. Are you leaning your guns in a corner in the chicken coop?? No dust or debris in my cabinets last time i checked.
 
Mine never sit long enough to accumulate dust and debris....I SHOOT THEM.....
personally, I would never put ANYTHING in the bore that doesw not belong there. Just asking for trouble.....
 
Yikes I seem to have touched a nerve. I figured it might be unsafe (which is why I have never tried it). I have enough rifles that some of them sit for awhile, there is dust accumulates anywhere given the proper amount of time. Pulling a blaze orange foam plug out of a barrel is much easier than removing glue deposits from tape. If you dont notice an a bright orange chunk of somthing sticking 3/4 of an inch out of the end of your barrel before you load and fire your rifle, there is somthing wrong with your brain.

Yeah, you should notice it. But every year someone ends up blowing up a barrel because they forget to remove a bore sighter.... go figure... thats why in my opinion its never wise to shove anything down the barrel. How dirty can it get in a safe anyways... As for hunting unless you are in the pouring rain, I would never cover the barrel.....
 
All my hunting rifles get a piece of gun tape stuck over the end of the muzzle and trimmed around the edges, not with the tape run down along the sides of the barrel as well. It disappears at the shot, so I assume the air being pushed ahead of the bullet just blows the piece of tape off. Keeps rain, snow, the golden BB twig or pine needle out of the bore, etc.
 
Why not the earplug trick?

Like it's just a small pc of expanding foam held by a friction fit. I don't think I would use a whole one and jamb it tight, but a part of one would work well enough. The only problem I can see is if it gets wet and holds water against the bore.

For me, that just becomes too much of something IN the bore as opposed to something over the bore. I guess somebody with one of those CED home pressure lab setups could test it easily enough - mine is at my brother's right now and has been for a while. Compare the traces. But for me, a piece of gun tape completely over the muzzle face and trimmed around the edges stays there, keeps everything out, and just leaves me feeling better about things.
 
i highly doubt that hardly anyone of us 'sniper typers' have the equipemnt to evaluate such a slight change in chamber pressure. seven layers of tape may cause an issue, but one??naww,
i use elctricians tape and wrap it only once, never had a problem.
i feel a hole lot better about the air pushing the tape apart than having a foreign object (esp snow) in there. especially if your your in and out of a vehicle with snow in the bbl, it melts then freezes when you get out the next time
besides most of the time i hunt its coldernhell and the tape is brittle.
i also wrap spares around the barrel. it works as emergency bandaid too.

On old dairy farmer friend of ours (81 and gets minimum a couple of deer a year, all 8 of his kids hunt) says that he doesn't clean his guns after using them, because shooting them will clean 'em out...
 
I have used tape, the little rubbers condoms that you buy at Rusell's and the finger from one of those latex gloves (small). Never used an earplug though. I can't see why it should be a problem for storage, but I wouldn't use them in the field.

As I've been told, the 'little rubbers' are called finger cots and are available at safety supply outlets. They work well.
 
Sticking foam ear plugs in the muzzle of the gun can trap moisture against the metal and cause rust, especially if stored for long term. When hunting & I feel the need, I go to the local drug store and buy a pack of Finger Cots (like mini condoms) that can be placed over the end of the barrel. No sticky residue like from tape and they've very cheap to buy.
 
I never store any of my rifles with the muzzle covered, but in the field during deer season I have always used painters tape cut to size to cover the barrel, and it does not leave residue. My buddy has been using the soft expanding ear plugs for years in the field and he says they just blow out when the rifle is fired.
