Right now i am using promo powder because the price is right, however i find it quite dirty especially when i start loading at the 19 and 19.5 level for a little hotter load.I also use cheddite primers because of price and find the odd one falls out of my reload. When i go to put it in the box. Only 3 in a 1000 shells. My shooting buddies at the club say they can hear a different sound every once in a while using the cheddite primers but never when i use the Federal 209A. Thinking of going to 700x and just using the federal primers only. Has anyone else found this to be a problem. Maybe it is a case of you get what you pay for.

Instead of going to the 700x Why not try the Red Dot. It measures the same as Promo and to me it burns cleaner. I have been told 700x is a kicker.

When I was still reloading/shooting 12ga target loads I used 700X. I didn't find that recoil was much of an issue (compared to other powders), but it wasn't a very clean burning powder.

I have found that 700x is easy on the shoulder and remember remington advertising their product in 1 oz loads to manage recoil.

re clean powders

For clean shooting you will be hard pressed to find a better powder than clays, it is even cleaner than american select, it is a single based powder and has a low level of perceived recoil. Solo 1000 is also great but is not easy to find in canada. My son and I have burned kegs of 700x in the past and it is filthy, your hands are always black from handling the fired empties, and it is noted as a sharp recoiling powder.

I agree that 700x is more dirty than clays. Everything is more dirty than clays. I have loaded both with 7/8 oz loads and my perception tells me that clays produces the sharper recoil. Anyway I do not plan to change powder anytime soon because I just scored a super deal on another 12 pounder. Since I switched to an auto loader, I'll probably use cheap hulls and not handle those dirty things.

Just spent the summer shooting nothing but 18 gr. ( 1 oz. 12ga.) "Promo" loads (save a couple of flats of Kent Blue Diamonds) out of a 391, maybe 3500 rounds or so in total. "Dirt" is a non-issue. Winchester 209 primers only.
Consistant ignition, no punk reports or bloopers.

Clays, Tightwad and Red Dot have all been clean with my reloads. Unique has been a little dirtier. Like has been said about 700X, it isn't as clean as any of the above. In fact, I can get rid of a fair amount of the nasty black crap in the barrel put there while shooting 700X by passing a shot through it using Clays. I really developed a problem with 700X while looking for a load using RXP12 wad in Rem Nitro cases for some reason. I've since found a load with Red Dot and the same wad that shoots clean. So, I'm saving the 700X for the summer time. It's my first winter for reloading shotshells and some problems surface with the colder weather, that's for sure.

Try a lb. of Clays, low recoil, VERY, VERY CLEAN and same speed from shot.
I've used the chedites for years with zero problems, but this weekend someone was telling me a certain hull (one i don't use) has an issue with the primer pocket being loose and dropping primers.

check your hulls

Mike.

I too shot Promo a lot last year out of a 391. I found it just caked up under the forearm at the gas port. Filthy stuff.

I have been shooting Titewad for awhile. Excellent powder, clean burning and soft on the shoulder. I have a 1 ounce load, 17 grs, win pink wad and a win 209 primer.

I shoot Promo (mostly) out of a 391 "dry" and out of a DT10.
Again, "dirty" has not been an issue. The 391 gets a wipe down each time it's put away and a full "internal" cleaning once a year ( right down to disassembly of the forend nut). After burning-up over a hundred pounds of Promo since it became available, I've got no issues with it at all. What little bit of residue that remains in the barrel is of no consequence to me.

Red Dot costs just a little more where I am ($20 8 lbs). I think you will find it cleaner and more consistent than Promo.

I've shot lots of Red Dot, Green Dot, Blue Dot, 700X, 800X, Clays, International Clays, 452AA, Super Target, 473AA, 540, 571, Super Field, Unique... and a few others.

Quite satisfied with Promo for target loads.

How did you find that 452AA. I have just had a large quantity given to me.

Winchester's 452AA (from back in the day) was replaced by Super Target.
( much like 473AA was replaced with Super Field ) As I recall, it loads basically the same as Super Target, ( by weight) but check an old manual first to be sure - and weigh your charges - you may or may not have to go down a bushing size to match density.

If you cant find any old data, PM me, I have some old Winchester load manuals on file.

Shot lots (maybe 100-150 pounds) of it almost exclusively for targets ... and liked it ... remember buying 8lb. containers of it for less than $75 ... back when there was no GST ! Gave really good patterns with the old AA"Handicap" wads too, ( AA factory Handicap loads were black with Silver load data) ... wish we could still get those !

I shoot 700X , but but use longshot mostly.
In my small bores longshot works great, but it needs a lot of pressure to work, so I don't use it in the 12 guage - my PW is set up for 700X and WAA12'a and everything works fine.
I don't find that much of an issue with 700X, but I shot red dot for a while and it is nice as well.
Tried longshot in my .45 IPSC wheelgun, and it burns SUPER DIRTY at low pressure!!

My best shooting buddy likes 700X too, and he has shot clays far longer than I have. I've noticed though, that he has experienced some problems with ignition and fouling as the colder weather has come on. He shoots fairly standard 1oz loads. I have had the same experience with 700x as the colder weather has come on. During the spring, summer and fall it was a bit dirtier, but I really didn't see a lot to choose between 700x and clays, titewad and red dot. The latter may have changed a bit since the cold came on, but they all have stayed cleaner than 700X. I did try a few increased loads with 700X just to see if things would clean-up, but there was no obvious change and I have decided to shelve it until spring. I'm definitely leaning toward Clays or Tightwad. The Tightwad has been especially nice for AAHS cases an XL-1 wad and 1oz of #8 1/2 or #9 for skeet.

Yup, cold weather and 700X are not a good combo!
