Different trigger for my Glock 17

Here is the difference between the connectors:

All Glocks can use any connector, it's a direct swap out part.
#3.5 (#4.5) has a minus sign. Hmm, looks like they changed the numbers a bit.
#5.5 has no sign at all
#8.0 has a plus sign

As for the naysayers, including the grumpy neighbour of the beast, Glocks have horrible triggers out of the box - modify away.

so when a gun is said to come with 3.5 and 5.5 connectors, does that mean it's coming with the hardware to turn it into a 3.5# trigger?

That's what I would get out the description. replacing the connectors isn't difficult but it does require removal of the frame pins and technically under Glock warranty, that voids it.

Get this kit from Glockmeister.

If you shoot IPSC Production and you install this trigger, you have now changed to Standard.

Use Glock factory parts and you will remain in Production.

If you just shoot for sh*tz and giggles, go for it.

Instead of buying the whole assembly its cheaper and funner to just get the 4.5lb connector and install it yourself.
