Anyone have any suggestions of some different looking varmint/plinker rifles? I want a semi auto . A rifle that is Non restricted, so I can go out to farmers pastures and put some furry varmints to rest. I am currently thinking about going for a H&K SL8 since its about the only cool (different) looking rifle out there that isn't restricted that I know of. I was hoping to find a rifle that looks similar to an AR 15 but havent come across one that is Non restricted yet that I like. Would just like some names of some different Non restricted rifles that you guys know of that I am able to purchase in Canada. Just need some names of a few and Ill have a look on the net at some pictures of them.

Thanks

I'll have to agree. I don't want anyone to jump on me for this, but you don't really want to be going around with an AR type rifle. Don't flame me yet!

Think about it. You live in Canada, a great contry yes, but it's populated with city folk, liberal minded tree humpers. A couple years back, the RCMP swarmed on a couple of kids shooting gophers with a BB gun! Someone drove by and reported 'terrorists' running around with guns. You may have better luck approaching landowners for permission to hunt if your rifle appears more "Civil" Don't flame me yet!

A hunter that knocks on the door of Joe Farmer with a rifle that looks like it came straight from the movie he watched last night may not help you gain access. A rifle that looks more traditional and 'safer' might earn you brownie points. The last thing you need is to have a SWAT team interupt your day with a chopper above and guns drawn.

Ok, flame suit on. :p

i agree that is why i went to a 10/22 ruger and put a buttler creek folding stock onto it. it still has the nice AR look but you dont get the cops on you.

i was looking into the AR-180b myself and IMO it leaves a lot to be desired as a varminting platform. byt he time you get a solid scope mount on it, accurize it, etc its mega bucks. IMO look elsewhere, unless you REALLY want something that looks like an AR but is non-restricted.

the Mini-14 target is a good deal for $900 - youre not going to find a better semi-auto sub-MOA varmint rifle at anywhere near that price.

You are looking for something that is not there!

Very few of the Mini-14 or AR-180B can consistently come under 3 MOA (Maybe someone else can comment on the SL8). While this may not be an issue plinking at the range, the inaccuracy of these rifles can be a frustrated experience in varmint hunting.

A lot of valid points here - AR looking rifles will scare off farmers for sure.

You are better off to get two rifles – one for hunting and the other to go with your SWAT setup at the range.

:D:D:D

A mini-14? Everything I've read in CGN says turn and run away quickly from mini-14s. Not an accurate rifle at all for distance shooting.
Find yourself a used .22 auto loader for cheap or new for that matter. (Heck I just sold a scoped .22 Cooey semi)
Like was said...Farmers don't wanna see Rambo knocking on their door.

Read the advice again. Two different animals. ;)

Sounds to me as though you're a candidate for a Ruger Mini14 - target. :)

Don't walk up to the farmer with your gun in your hands?? Just a thought. Unless you're shooting from his yardsite he won't know what you got unless he asks.

Two words for you: Robinson XCR! Non restricted and very cool looking indeed... kind of a mix between an MP5 and AR type in my opinion. It will destroy anything varmint related with ease, but you really lose a lot in accuracy going semi auto. That Mini 14 target with the fancy "heavy barrel" and harmonizer is a waste of money! If you remove the plastic cover/handguard you'll see it doesn't actually have a heavy barrel! I was shocked when the guy at the gun shop showed me this, because I was about to buy one until I saw that the heavy part of the barrel shrinks back to the normal size when it ducks out of sight under the handguard so nobody is the wiser.
If you want a varmint rifle that will be pure pleasure to shoot and has a beautiful tactical look to it, go pick up the Tikka T3 Tactical with the heavy barrel. I couldn't afford it so I opted for the stainless steel T3 Varmint, heavy barrel instead and saved $700. My rifle is pure pleasure to shoot and it cloverleafs at 120 yards with ease. It probably cloverleafs at 200 too, but I just haven't tried it yet that far out. It's bolt action, but there isn't a need for any follow up shots with that kind of sub MOA accuracy, and there's no smoother, faster action out there from what I've seen. Sorry if I sound like a commercial, but it's the truth! Before you decide on a semi auto hold a Tikka T3 Tactical and tell me you don't love it, and that it doesn't satisfy your desire for a military-looking rifle.
