Difficulties inserting rounds in 870 express?

Sometimes when I go to insert a shell into my 870 express it does not "click* in...I take it back out, and reinsert it and it goes in fine. I have no idea why it doesn't go in sometimes on the first go...anyone got any ideas?

my winchester does this also i have deduced it to the angle the rim of the shell goes in at is insufficient to clear the catch lip thingy

Does the round go all the way in and THEN not click or does it go in most of the way BUT NOT ALL THE WAY?

If it is the latter then make sure th efore end is all the way forward, there is some play in the fore end and if it is not all the way forward the round will not go completely in.

What kind of ammo?

It will go in all the way but not "click" it'll just push against the spring and i'll pop it back out. Sometimes the foreend is a bit back when this happens...but 870s have a bit of play in the forened so it won't "lock" completely in position. So if it's not all the way forward it's because of the looseness...I do not go 'easy' on this gun...I mean I clean it and everything but I am firm when I work the forend.

Could be the brand of shot shell, there seems to be differences in rims and/or quality from brand to brand. Try another brand and see if the problem still happens.

The brand is Remington "low recoil" 2 3/4" slugs. Though I suspect the foreend coming back a little when the gun is tilted, it doesn't happen when I use 3" Winchester magnums.

I think you're right as I have the same experience with my 870. If I am loading off hand with the gun upside down and the barrel pointed downwards I don't have this problem but if I am loading it right side up and the barrel is pointed slightly upwards, it happens.

I have the same trouble with my 870 express as well. Only from time to time.
My friend seems to think the problem is that i'm not working the action hard enough when I load the first shell.
If I'm loading a few shells to take a crack a group of grouse, I'll try to work the action slowly and quietly as to not spook them (if they even spook).
