Looking to make the jump this spring to either open or standard in IPSC, been shooting production and classic up til now. For guns, likely going to STI as I have a 1911 now that I am very happy with. Looking at Edge or USPSA legend for standard or Trubour for open. I should add that I am a semi-old guy with not perfect close vision and shooting red dot is a bit easier for me, moved to that for 3gun pistol.

Any thoughts/comments

If you want to use a RDS or other electronic sight, you're going to be Open (not Production as I mistakenly wrote)

Around here, the Open shooters all have spacey-looking ray guns with colour matching holsters and mag pouches - and that's the guys...

We don't get many Standard shooter here, really it's Prod, Classic and Open with a handful of Std. That could be a good thing, but generally it means you're in a smaller group of competitors and a small mistake could bounce you to the bottom pretty quickly.

If you go open, plan on spending some serious money to get to a level playing field equipment wise.

Wow. This post reminds me of those little cartoons under the "count the errors" heading.

I guess depending on your situation, financially and technically.

if you have deep wallet, and that only a fully customized gun can unleash your full potential, then go open.
if you are limited with funds and also still learning the rope, but still want some customization on the gun, standard.

Open will have a higher cost-of-entry than Standard (the gun and optics only - belt, mags, holster, etc are the same price), but, once you are up-and-running, Open should have a lower operating cost. Particularly if you are shooting 9mm major (.38 Super is also cheaper - assuming you don't lose any brass). Every time you pull the trigger in Open it will cost less.

And with the eyesight issue - I'd say a move to Open sounds like the right thing.

If you want/need optics, open is the way to go.

But get the optics frame mounted, not slide, quicker sight aquisition as the optics aren't being slammed around by the slide and all you are dealing with is muzzle flip.
