Hey guys new here so be nice! Lol

Haven’t shot much in the past couple decades, other than air guns a bit, shot a Brno 22 with a cheapish leupold although I thought it was the cats ass back then! Was so proud of that rifle, but that and all the rest of our guns were stolen in a home break in 30yrs ago.

Anyway bought a cz455 grey laminate thumbhole from my brother with a UTG 3-12 swat mil dot not mounted at them moment. With a trigger kit as well. I think I need two rimfires for the moment, one for me and one for the wife and daughter, should I mount the UTG on the cz and use it and get them something cheaper like a savage mark2fv and a scope around the same, or should I give them the scope to mount on a savage or whatever and get new glass for myself, or should I let them use this setup and get myself a whole new setup like a tikka t1x, bergara 14 or equivalent and an appropriate scope for said rifle.

And if you choose the whole new setup any recommendations other than what I’ve mentioned for rifles or scopes? Brother is a definite vortex fan now and that’s what he recommends and has on his new 457 but I also know there’s others that may be better for the dollar and also don’t always want to be “just like him” lol

Thanks

I’ve got several Vortex scopes and several Vortex red dots and in my opinion it’ll be hard to get another maker that gives so much for your dollar . Great optics for a great price . I have three rifles with other decent makes like Nikon , Eotech etc but if you’re looking for value , the Vortex line is awesome .
Also welcome to the forum !

Hey Chris-I'll help you spend your money! :)

First-off, any 455/457 will likely be a step-up from a Savage..so let your budget dictate what to do there. I've owned a couple of Savage 22s over the years and never got or saw the kind of accuracy people claim...but looking back, I didn't try the variety of ammo through them that I buy/use today. For the sake of argument, I'll accept that Savages may shoot as well as CZs..just haven't seen it myself yet.

I've put 10s of thousands of rounds through CZs and once owned a BRNO 2E. The BRNO 2E was a great gun I probably shouldn't have sold, just wanted to let you know your memory of that gun is probably spot-on. If it was that gun/stock unmodified, scope use would have been a bit of a stretch. The 2E has great iron sights, stock geometry meant for them. A modern CZ (452, 453, 455, 457) would be better-suited to scope use, but keep in mind that the "LUX" models (with iron sights) will present the same challenge as the BRNO 2E.

What scope? I'm not sure a "UTG" scope will wring the best accuracy out of a good make like CZ/Tikka or even a Savage. Again, one would need to know the budget before making a suggestion. I mentioned this a few times recently, but the last new scope I bought to put on a .22 was this one; https://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes...es-series/fullfield-e1-riflescope-4.5-14x42mm

Other than a very stiff magnification adjustment ring, I love this scope. Having said that, I have more time behind cheap scopes than "good" ones and I bet there are probably people on this site who would consider that^ Burris to be a budget option. Just make sure that whatever you pick, look at the parallax setting. For 22/rimfire, it can be a huge benefit to be able to focus down for close shots. Cheap 3-9X you see everywhere are meant for centerfire rifles with a parallax setting of 100 yards+. Even "rimfire" branded scopes usually have a parallax setting of 50-60 yards+. I have adjustable objective scopes that can function clearly without parallax error as close as 10-15 yards. Once you have access to the equipment exchange here on CGN, search "AO" the Optics sub-forum. You'll probably see some decent options pop-up that would be great for rimfire. Feel free to ask about a specific scope if you have any questions. Generally speaking, ones I look at include Sightron, Leupold, Burris...and I've had a number of older, AO Bushnells (glossy black finish) that were a pleasure to use on 22s as well.

I have a new 457 that has only left the house once...but as things stand, I think I like the Tikka T1x as much or more than the bolt action 22s I've had serious time with. When I get the new trigger spring in the 457 and have done some load testing, we'll see. I'd still be surprised if I liked running it more than the Tikka.

What type of shooting do you do? Are you only looking for bolt actions?
Not necessarily just a bolt, would consider anything that will be very accurate, heard 10/22’s can do just about anything but there’s so many things you can do to them not sure I’m ready for that! As for type of shooting, not sure what type is around me, I’ve got a 300yd outdoor range 4 min from my house and read that they have PR and SiL 2 person competitions, which I don’t really know what those are yet, haven’t tried it, definitely will see what they offer come spring, but yeah it will be mostly range shooting for these rigs

Good day, I will not read the various answers ; to lead me somewhere else.
Your CZ Is a perfectly fine rifle.
but in my opinion: the scope is : sh_it and do not make this rifle shine.
-You are not talking about budget and preferences.
If you want to go cheap, get a savage and put your UTG 3-12 on it.
But keep in mind, Savage are as accurate as my CZ, yeap ! sorry to admit it, but thats it.
I had few Vortex scope some HST and PST diamondback, strike eagle, but not anymore. theres better options out there, depends of your expectations. Lots of Vortex in Equipment Exchange ( for sale), one thing everybody do agree: good warranty.....
Dont be affraid to spend some $$ on the optic.
If you want to go another route:
Its hard to upgrade from the CZ 455, there's different model available: Tikka, Savage, another CZ, Ruger, AN$$chutz, and the list goes on.
Wood, plastic...depends what YOU want. Do you want to keep the CZ for yourself ?
22 lr Accuracy is directly linked to the ammo. you need to try some.
You can leave this set up as is, and get you something else.

Thanks for all the info, have no idea what model Brno I had, it did have really nice iron sights, I think with adjustment for range in the rear, but honestly don’t know I was like 8! Dad said I could get that or the Browning and we liked the stock on the Brno, had that curl at the front fore end, and yeah we had leupold 3 x 9 scope on it, gold banner or band is all I remember! Used to shoot old 22 shells wedged into a piece of wood at 25yds and would never miss! Or so I remember! Lol.

As for a scope I’m definitely willing to go up, 500-1k probably. But wondering if I should get another rifle and let them shoot the cz, then they atleast get a nice rifle as well, but what would I get that would be a step up? Tikka T1X, bergara b14, cz 457…what else in the 1500$ range shoots as good? I know people say Anschutz, but I don’t know what models are good and how much are they?…
Was looking at these

Maybe I'm weird... but if the wife/daughter wanted/needed a rifle to come with me to the range
- I'd sure be looking for the best rifle/scope I could afford...
- Involve them in the buying process (It's not because you like something that they will)

a partner that shoots is worth their weight in gold :)

I have 2 Tikka T1x's - one for my wife and one for myself We have one in 16inch and one in 20inch. They are a great guns. Both have a Vortex 4-12 crossfire scope with parallax adjustment. Vortex is great for the price and their warranty is outstanding should you ever need it. While I really like the CZ457 I found the Tikka was just a better fit for me. The Tikka has a lot of after market support as well.

Your CZ likely won't work for silhouette due to the stock shape, but you can get a stock for it that will.

Or you can go with a CZ457 or T1X in a regular stock. Both will work so long as they don't have a straight barrel (silhouette rules).

Any of them could also work for PRS base class.

The next update would be a Bergara B14R. I could work well for silhouette with a different stock/single shot adapter, or well for PRS from the factory.

Nice grouping! Is that cz? And what scope? Anyway you said there was better options than the vortex line, I’ve found many good scopes, but seem to be more expensive than the vortex’s for the features and glass quality(from what I’ve heard anyway).

Still not sure what I’m doing yet, liking the cz mdt xrs fre chassis rifle, bergara, t1x, Christensen arms ranger 22, also found a Anschutz 1761 for 1800, a few hundred more but might be worth it? I don’t know? Maybe just get a cheap heavy barrel savage and 2 good scopes and see how it goes in the spring and upgrade if I feel I need it.

Interesting about the fit, might have to try a tikka in a shop compared to my cz, don’t have an opinion on the cz yet as haven’t shot it yet, actually got it saying it was for the wife and daughter so they could shoot their own instead of borrowing from the ladies club! Don’t have range gun for myself yet, other than a Diana model 48 air rifle! do have a gsg 16, but that’s not really a range gun!

Interesting about the factory laminated stock not legal in silhouette… didn’t realize that, not sure if that class of tournament is around here though, did read that there was a PR and SIL partner match last fall…. just realized that probably means silhouette! Lol. And do really like the bergara, haven’t actually held one, but they sure look nice and got some really good reviews. Also looking at cz457 mdt xrs fde chassis rifle, what’s the legality of those?

Chassis rifles (or your CZ) can in theory shoot in one category of Silhouette provided the total weight is under 10.5# with scope.
They aren't ideal but no match director will turn you away so long as your rifle is safe. Shoot a few matches and see if you want to go with a more specific rifle.

Be nice he says.

Wow nice grouping! Makes me rethink my choices here, was leaning towards either the Bergara b14r or the tikka t1x with either a arken or athlon scope, and eventually put them in a woox furiosa chassis(fell in love with that wood/metal combination) but my other option was either a new 1761 or a used match 52, both are 1800, and then add probably an arken scope as it’s a bit cheaper than the athlon. Hmm not sure now! Lol
