getting a new moose rifle this week. Have looked at many, and decided on two. savage 114 euro classic, or the remington CDL, Both would be in 30-06.I like the look of walnut and a high polished blued barrel. Which would you pick, and why? Please help, I can't make the decision on my own. And yes I've held both, and both fit and feel perfect. please tell me what to spend my money on.

Go back to the store, spend a little time with both rifles. See which one FITS you the best......then...buy a RUGER!! ;)

The last family of rifles I would buy is a Savage, ugly guns. Accurate though.

For a few years I hunted with guys that shot Savages and each year for three years one of them shot their deer using my backup model 70. One had a mag srping get damaged and his gun became a singleshot(and he wasn't that good a shot), another had a spring in the bolt go boing so the gun wouldn't fire and the third on discovered his new laminated stock was cracked at the wrist(Savage replaced it right away, but missed the season)

The one with the broken stock shot some of the best groups from a factory rifle I've ever seen and the rifle sure looked good, but after three years in a row lending different guys my backup rifle because their savages were broken in some way convinced me not for hunting.

SOLID advice!!:)

Of the two you mention though, I'd go with the CDL. Not as 'ready' as the Savage out of the box, but much more 'potential' IMO. I have a CDL in 223 and it is a good rifle, nice fit/finish, nice handling and accurate.

See the futility of asking such a question on these threads? Each writer will either 1) give you an opinion of his personal choice, or 2) Try and get you to buy the one he got stuck with, so he won't feel lonely! If enough answer the thread you will be advised to buy every rifle on the market!
In the end, the rifle is for you, only you know what is important for you and in the end you will (should, anyway) buy the rifle that suits you the best and live happyily ever after.
If I were going to buy a rifle, the last thing I would do would be to ask some stranger what I should buy.
Asking a specific question, such as, who has had trouble with rifle X, or does the stock crack, or the magazine on rifle ZZ give trouble, are different and legitimate questions to ask.

I would pick the Savage. The Remington is good too. Get the one YOU like and it will be the right choice.

the real 'futility' is that in 9/10 of these threads, after countless people have wasted their time giving advice on what to buy, the OP goes and buys some complete abortion like the Mossberg 4x4 or Remington 770.

If I were making the decision you are I would pick the savage, they seem to be accurate out of the box and a solid gun. In my opinion the model 114 looks better than the remington anyway.

Couple of differences to compare.

Savage has a 22" barrel and overall length of 43.25"
Remington has 24" barrel and overall length of 44.5"

Savage has a detachable mag
Remington has a drop hinge Mag.

Savage is 7 lbs.
Remington is 7.5 lbs

Safety position and function is different.
