Hello,

I am looking for some advice/help from some fellow 550b owners.

I recently ran into issues using Dominion large rifle primers in my 550b. The primers are either too large or out of round and will not function in my Dillon. They wont fit in the pickup tube or the primer tube. They require that I use the plastic indicator rod to push them through.Unfortunately my POS Lee Precision hand primer wont work on them either but that’s besides the point.

Anyways apparently I need to purchase more primers. Anybody have similar issues with other brands of primers? I don’t want to purchase another carton and have it not work again.

just out of curiosity are these the berdan large rifle primers. Because if they are they are a different size to regular boxer larger rifle primers. CCI primers of all sizes have always ran well in my dillion.

I've tried to load up primers that have fallen on the floor and got them stuck because they were out of round. I would run a cleaning patch or a few through the tube just in case any buildup has stuck to the inside of the tube.

I polished the insides of my primer tubes with a .22 jag and a patch covered in Autosol metal polish in order to allow the Dominion LR primers to fit.

Primers are definitely Boxer style. I will try to polish the primer tubes today.

CCI primers seem to work no issues. The only CCI primers I have are ancient though

Okay update-Success!

I polished the primer tubes with a .22 cal mop and toothpaste. Primers now feed with ease.

Toothpaste is surprisingly aggressive on aluminum.

Okay another update:

Primers are still too tight to seat into Lapua brass. The mighty Dillon won’t seat them.

Looks like they are out of spec garbage. Sooo frustrating.

I have used all kinds of primers on my 550 ( albeit not DA primers) and never had an issue.

If they are so out of round they don't work in the primer tube I'm guessing you are having seating issues as well?

I suppose I have run over 20K/30K SPP/LPP Dominion primers through my 550 without issues. To be fair I have not had any experience with their rifle primers as I have enough Winchester and CCi primers around for the small amount of rifle I load for. I do ensure I have the right primer arm in my press though. I assume the OP checked to ensure he had the large primer cup in use.

Dominion & Tula primers have worked well for me in my pistols with identical results over my Chrony compared to my tested loads using Winchester, Rem., or CCI. The major difference is the price. As long as I can buy Dominion/Tula for under $5.00/100 I am going to. The savings is just to great to ignore.

I also ran into the same problem with Prvi Partizan brass. I fixed it with a Lyman primer pocket reamer.

I suspect the primer pockets on our brass are the issue not the primers. Lots of brass about with tight primer pockets that require swagging before they are much use to reloaders. I toss S&B brass and Federa; NT brass for this reason. Not worth the effort to swage out the pockets on 9MM brass.

Hi, I have 2 550s, and both of mine, and several pick up tubes are all the same with Dominion Primers.
Have to painstakingly load them singly in the primer tube on the 550.
They are definitely not garbage though, in my experience, they actually seem to work better on lots of loads then CCI or Federals, from load testing on my Labradar, but also, because the Dominion Primers are just a hair bigger, I can use them on brass with loose primer pockets, that will not hold cci or other Primers anymore.
Because they are a bit bigger, make sure your brass is very centered in your 550 shellholder, as all it takes is a tiny bit of misalignment or loose shellholder, and they are tough to seat properly.

I think I got an out of round batch. They bind in the primer tube. They are hard seating as well. I just picked up Federal LR Match primers. They seat easier but still get are a struggle. I think Lapua brass might be tight.
