I have been in contact with Dillon regarding the purchase of a 550B for two calibres 9mm & 45 acp. When all is said and done and accessories are added the total price is acceptable but then they send via Fed Ex with an approx. charge of $200. Has anyone ordered direct from Dillon ad paid this high price? Does the Fed Ex International shipping come with any hidden charges once the package hits Canada -, ie brokerage, duty, taxes etc. If so how much?

I ordered my 650 from sit esponsor Shooting Edge and got it within a week. Dillon quoted me "maybe 4-6 weeks if your lucky".

North; You would still need to tack on GST and PST if applicable and a collection fee (for the taxes)
Then depending on which service they use from Fedex you may also get hit with Brokerage.

See below in bold.

Anything I order from the States I make sure to get it sent by US Postal Service.

If the dealer can't send by USPS, I buy here in Canada.

Those carriers will charge you 1 kidney and 1 lung if you allow them. I try to avoid them anyway I can.

AP-MAN; There are no brokerage fees for Fedex if you use the higher end services... with UPS there is also world ship services that again do not have brokerage costs.. Not sure about the higher end services.. I have accounts with Fedex...

So your blanket statement does not hold true exactly.. However They do do charge a lot if you use the lower end services and don't have an account...

Ways to mitigate this.. Have your own broker, Have an account with the courier and use services that don't attract brokerage or clear things yourself . (that only works if you are near a Customs office and have time!)

UPS has always screwed me with a 2 month later Brokerage fee.................... AVOID THEM LIKE AN STD

I have ordered directly from Dillon several times.

I have never paid a brokerage fee; just GST, PST and the $8.95 Canada Customs charges to stick their paperwork on the box.

Unfortunately they don't ship USPS to Canada

They don't ship machine by USPS, only by FedEx, that's what the guy told me. They will ship USPS for small box. I have received a package from dillon directly and USPS has charged me 9.95$ for custom fees and I had to pay gst and pst. That said it cost me 92$ for shipping so at the end it wasn't cheaper then ordering from my local supplier at a higher price.

Just going by what they say?

We can offer you UPS International, which is nearly half again more than the FedEx charges, but that would be the only other alternative. We do not ship machines via USPS as they are very prone to losing them and we both get stuck for the charges. With FedEx, if they lose the order they pay for it, that won’t happen with the USPS. You are welcome to investigate other alternatives, the total weight of the order is 53 pounds (24kg), however, you will find that the FedEx price offered here is the best price you will get. The normal FedEx shipping rate for this order would be US$306.63, but we get a reduced rate with them and we pass that savings on to our customers.

Thank you for choosing Dillon Precision.

You might be better off getting one from P&D.

It is news to me that Dillon won't ship via USPS. That is the way I get all of my Dillon products. Perhaps a recent policy change? That said, FedEx or UPS, in addition to brokerage fees, which they may or may not charge you with, depending on what service you opt for, always tack on additional fees and surcharges. You'll also be responsible for paying the GST and PST based on the assessed value of the items, regardless of which level of service you select. The only good thing is that because Dillon products are manufactured in the USA, you won't have to pay any duty thanks to NAFTA.

If its going to cost you hundreds of dollars to order factory direct, I'd definitely consider buying your equipment here in Canada. The dollar is below par at the moment as well, so you really need to do your math to figure out whether or not that "deal" south of the border will really pan out for you in the end. Forewarned is forearmed! Best of luck with the purchase, they're good machines.

You live in Calgary. Shooters Edge has as good a supply of Dillon machines as I've seen anywhere (P& D in Edmonton are pretty good as well). you can take it home with you today...no shipping or border hasles, the've already done that for you and from what I've seen their prices are't that much more than Dillon web site.

I went into the TSE looking to buy a Dillon. I asked if they had one that wasn't on the shelf.... Guy said " ya, I dunno......" I asked if he could go check and he scampers off to the back.

10 min go by and no guy. I decide to leave and on my way out I see him at the front desk helping another customer. Had similar experiences both times and find it much easier to buy from these other site sponsors or Murray Gardner (like I just did). To be fair TSE could have probably sold me a 550 that day but there was a lack of effort for sure.

You will have to go in and make the judgment for yourself and see if they have the Dillon you are looking for!
