I have been debating if it is worth it to purchase one of these.
I have been reloading on a 550 and just purchased a 650 and am not convinced it's needed but think it might be a good back up. But at around $100 bucks......
Any thoughts?

In my opinion it's not needed. Assuming you've been loading for a while on your 550 - have you felt you were missing something? The powder check and the low powder warning devices are money makers for Dillon. I put a case feeder on my 550 years ago and have cranked out 10's of thousands or rounds, and never once had a low/no powder issue.

I stopped using my low powder warning device on my 650. Once I get the powder hopper to throw what I need, I visually check every round and randomly sample every 7-9th round just to be sure as I'm going.

If you don't use the hopper and drop in powder manually by hand, there is even less of a need for a checker.

I've been loading (mostly 40 S&W) on a 650 for 10+ years without a powder check. I have a bright light positioned at the bullet seating station and I check each case visually for powder as it rotates into position, and do periodic spot checks, dumping the powder out and weighing it on a scale.

Last year I helped a friend set up his 650 with the powder check system, it is a bit fiddly but not unduly so.

This summer at a practice session I had my first squib load – I stopped shooting and easily cleared it, but it made me wonder what caused it and what might have happened had I not caught it.

So on a recent pilgrimage to Dillon in Scottsdale I bought a powder check system. As mentioned above, it is cheap insurance.

This is a much better way to spend that money. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/953375-Skylight-for-Dillon-xl650
