Dillon swager not seating primers deep enough?

So, I just set up my new Dillon Swager, and proceeded to swage some IVI 5.56 cases.

No matter what I try, I can’t get the primers to seat deep enough.

They are not counter sinking, but are protruding just a bit.

They seat easy enough but just not deep enough.

I have it set up, just so there’s barely enough space,to close the arm.

Anybody know what’s going on ? :)C32B8079-5A10-4D3B-9D28-3BB4C2FB00C5.jpg59882DC0-9187-4CA7-847F-D2948DA285D9.jpg

If you have a vernier caliper measure the primer height, then use the base of the vernier caliper to measure primer pocket depth.

On my Lake City 7.62 cases the Winchester primers were protruding .002 to .003 from the base of the case.

I uniformed the primer pockets and made the primer pockets .004 deeper so the primers would be .002 below flush.

After starting uniforming the primer pockets I checked some CCI primers and found they were shorter than the Winchester primers. And the CCI Primers would have seated below flush without uniforming the primer pockets.

Thanks,I’ll check that out tomorrow, it’s 1:30 AM ,ZZZ. I’m using CCI primers.

Bigdep that appears to be my problem.

My CCI primers are .1200
IVI pockets are .1155

I also checked Rem crimped, same problem.
Nobody else is having this problem?
Or is it even a problem?

So now I got to uniform them first?
They’re just a hair out past flush :)

I have a military diagram for Lake City 7.62 cartridge and it shows the primer .006 below flush.

If you want all manufactures of primers to fit below flush then uniform the primer pockets. Its a pain to do but you only need to do it once.

In the illustration below the large rifle primer can vary .010 in hight and the primer pocket can vary .007 in depth.

My larger rifle primer pocket uniformer is set at at .130 and it takes more brass out of my Lake City cases than commercial cases.

Don't feel bad I'm in the middle of uniforming 300 Lake City 7.62 cases. :bangHead:

I got 1500 IVI.
So once uniformed, do they still need swaging?
Or do uniforming only do the depth.

I think I can buy the correct attachment for my Frankfurt case prep Center.

It goes pretty fast if you power up the process. I put mine in a RCBS case center and its no worse than power chamfering or cleaning primer pockets. You've only got to do it once.

I seem to be using mine quite often these days on cases that I fixed the primer pockets on with the Rempel tool, then swaged open on the RCBS swage. My son uses it on his AR cases. Before that it sat around unused for years. Mind you, I don't spend a lot of time salvaging military brass. Good or not, its still a salvage operation and if you need an extra step so be it.

Still need swaging or reaming the crimp. I have a bunch of IVI 5.56 and 7.62 and the 5.56 has a much heavier crimp.
I hate uniforming, I only have the Lyman hand tool, but it does help.
Some brass the uniformer doesn't even touch the bottom of the pocket while others take a fair amount of cutting.

Swaging removes the crimp at the case mouth, uniforming only sets primer pocket depth.

Below military cases have a thicker flash hole web that adds strength to the base of the case and primer pocket.

If you use a shorter primer then you will not need to uniform the primer pocket. "BUT" if you forget and use a taller primer that extends past the base of the case you could have a slam fire.

So again I uniform all my primer pockets so all primers will fit below flush. And I like military Lake City cases because they use harder brass and made Ford Truck Tough.;)

Below a military Lake City 5.56 drawing that shows primer pocket depth .118 to .122 and the Lake City primers are below flush.
