A great CGNer is thinking about putting together a 300yd-400yd rifle for targets and maybe the odd 200yd deer.

I am too biased so I can't really help him. ( i.e I have more 6.5x55s then teeth and figure the only good place for a .308 is in an FN FAL)

Basically he is wondering about the merits of a .308 vs a 6.5x55. Cost is a factor so we have to think both cartridge and platform. trying to keep the project down in the 500-700 dollar range or less. He will be reloading so anemic factory loads are not a consideration.

Please give your learned advice

If my M38 Swedish Mauser is anything to go by one cannot go wrong with the 6.5x55 cartridge. Fast and flat! :D

I have read that it is also a very popular cartridge for target shooting in Europe, and is still used on Moose in Sweden.

Just my 2 bitz...take it for what it is worth.:D
 
As he reloads then I would lean towards the 6.5x55 cartridge. Great round with bullets with a very high ballistic coefficient - very stable at longer ranges. However, a rifle in 6.5x55 might be tougher to find in that budget bracket but I have heard good things about the CZ 550's if he can find one in that caliber. Basic Tikka T3 Lite's start around $700 + new. In .308 there are more options available for new guns in his price range - Savage comes to mind. Used guns are much easier to find in .308 as well. Will he be looking for a heavy weight varmit barrel or a light weight hunting barrel? If he wants a heavy weight barrel then he should go with the .308 unless he can wait a year or more and order in a Tikka Varmit in 6.5x55. They are a fair bit outside his stated budget as well - they run about a grand I think.
 
Yeah, I vote 260. Or 7mm08 if he can't find a 260.

Also consider a 6mm of some sort - they're extremely sucessful in competetive shooting (6ppc, 6br, 243, 6xc, etc), and ought to be OK for deer, if somewhat on the small side IMHO
 
Im here ya Muk Muk :D Just got in Late i asked David his advise as he knows these 6.5 so well.
I always shot a 308 but am willing to look at other maby better options. ;)
