Also, forgot to mention Vortex has changed their 'PRO' rings. I think the old ones are now called the 'Viper' series, and the new pro series is now horizontally split like the PMR/seekins design - look a lot like the 4 screw MDT 'premier' rings actually.
I have one set of the formerly 'pro' now 'viper' vortex rings. No issues to report. Had 3 or 4 different scopes through them over the last couple of years. I have heard the same reports (of vertically split rings being bad). Staying under 20in/lbs can alleviate a lot of problems I think.
