dirt inside casings

Just bought a Lee progressive turret to reload .40S&W and i picked up some once fired brass. I looked inside the casings and it appears there is some dirt or burnt powder inside the casings. Does this have to be cleaned before reloading and if so whats the best method to clean the inside of the casings. I did a search but didnt get a definate answer to my question. I assume the tumbler cleans the outside and the soot off the casings but does it clean the inside also?
 
The vibrating case tumblers work good to clean the inside of the cases as well. The corn cob, or walnut media gets inside the case no problem, it even gets into the flash hole on occasion. If we are talking about a case that has been squished into the mud and is plugged then I think you will likely have to remove the dried mud by hand.
 
no theres no mud just burnt powder...so i was hoping to get a tumbler the next time around. so i guess i have to clean this brass first. Is there a solution to clean them just to get me by for now?
 
You don't have to clean the inside of the case, only the outside, and that's only so you don't scratch your dies. A quick wipe with a rag should be enough, dampen with water, vinegar or lemon juice if you want.

My tumbler never cleans the inside of the case, they're all black inside and work fine.
