I picked up 150 brass today for my 357. I have never seen so much crud up under the lip. I had to dig it out with an AWL. It was like hard carbon.
My old brass has been re-loaded 4 times and has NO black ring. What causes this much build-up ??
My brass is on the LEFT..Dirty on the RIGHT.

Most likely whoever you got 'em from never cleaned them or his revolver. Isn't due to underpowered loads as you can load 'em to .38 Special velocities with no fuss.

I know a guy who doesn't own a brass polisher. We would sort out 9mm and 45 and 38s and take home a handful. I think thats how he got clean brass every once in a while. I wouldn't want his dies either. He never ever polished his 9mm brass.
A stainless steel hand brush, one of the dollar store cheapys and a good soak in hot water with automatic dish soap in it, wait 1 hour rinse and it brushes right off.
