Dirty little S.O.B.

Yeah, I know they're Wood Ticks and supposedly don't carry disease...but I still hate the little bastards with a passion. :)

I medicate my dog with a product that kills them but unfortunately requires them to bite first. The killing action is quick, and apparently they don't get to chew/suck on her long enough to transmit any disease. I find them dead periodically in her bed or even in her fur, and I inspect them very closely...yes, every single one. I have found a grand total of one Deer Tick on her after 5 Manitoba summers.

I've gotta admit, if there were a product for dogs that would effectively kill or repel the ticks before they bit, I would definitely be using it on her...and I'd probably be seriously thinking about taking and using it myself. :)

My uncle who lives 30 minutes north of me near Kingston, Ont has started losing the use of his right side. His arm, hand, leg and tongue have all been effected. His speech is impeded so much so, he sounds intoxicated. The KFLA health unit has stopped testing deer ticks, saying it's a waste of time and resources, they have said that within the previous 5 years 99% of Deer ticks tested were positive for Lyme disease. My uncle has had the initial treatment (Single dose of antibiotics) for a tick bite he had back in December. He is firm in his belief that his current condition is due to the bite, Only because over the last 3 months he has every test there is for neurological issues and everything has come back negative. Which is typical when Lyme disease is the issue. He see's a Neurologist in 3 weeks. Hopefully he will soon get answers but when it comes to ticks be sure to take any and all precautions. I wouldn't want to see anyone go through what he is.

I'll bet it was the antibiotic they gave him that caused his problem. I went through the same thing after a dose of Avelox and tell him to do some research into adverse affects from Avelox, Cypro, levaquine because he was most likely prescribed one of them. My results all came back me being in great health until I finally researched the antibiotic and my doctor did as well. There is tonnes of info out there of people going through the same thing and even a Facebook page for it.

I tried Nexgard the first time last year and it seemed to work well. While it's not supposed to repel ticks, I'd have to say there are considerably less crawling on the dog than without using anything.

We're using Bravecto; our vet suggested it after the dog reacted a bit to the previous product, the name of which eludes me now. She's a 16-year-old Pyrenees mix, in excellent shape for her age and still goes with me for a walk of at least a couple miles every morning. At this point in her life we don't change anything unless we need to; not really a dog you want to experiment with. :)

The Nexgard website does indicate that it works on ticks...I wonder how it tastes...? :)

A friend of mine has a serious health problem that has defied diagnosis. two years of gradual muscle loss. Now he can't walk.

Any chance it is Lyme disease?

There's a place down in Seattle that will check to see if it is Lyme disease they are very good at detecting it. you have to do a little Googling to find out what the actual name of the places though I can't remember off hand. Also they use the cheap test in Canada which is only about 50% accurate.

Stay out of the bright sun!

Oh yeah?. ....good to know. ..... I just had a beer watching the habs game without thinking about the effect it can have on the medecine.
I really hate this crap.....stupid tick is really causing me alot of stress....the bite area is still really sore.

From what I gather, the U.S. has more treatment facilities...is there anywhere to go in Ont/Qc. ?? It's very hard for me to understand why Canada wouldn't be up to speed on this ??..!!!

Pulled this well fed tic off the crack of my butt after he had feasted for a week. I picked him up walking my dog in the Rouge Valley/ Dec2015 in east Toronto.

Submitted him to Toronto Health Dept for testing if he carried lime. Toronto just has to be different than the rest of the province, who would have sent this sucker directly to Winnipeg for testing. Toronto sends them to another lab first, to determine if they are black legged tics first.

Few weeks later I got a call from Toronto Health saying there is a problem, my tic was lost!

Thanks for nothing!

I usually do a tick check after I've been out and about, however it doesn't include a "butt crack check". I wonder how many readers have done one since reading this...I have.

My daily spring/summer tick check includes, azz crack, balls and my jimmy.

I work mostly outside and every day I get home and do the same procedure, undress down to my boxers, leave my clothes outside and go straight to the washroom and do my body check.

I donno but my childhood was full of ticks. my mom must have pulled hundreds of them out of me as a kid. My dad is even a family doctor and I never got one checked out or anything.

If I was you I would assume that means it was positive. You might want to find out if any ticks have been declared to be positive for Lyme in that area.

Lyme has some very funny politics around it: CPHOs and others seem very slow and reluctant to admit its presence. Not sure why that is, but if a jurisdiction is claiming they don't have Lyme in their area, they may be very reluctant to admit otherwise.

What precautions were those of you who were bitten taking?

Damn. Yeah one more reason I hate the outdoors, as much as I love to get out there? It's not exactly getting any better these days.

I remember how Avril Lavigne's encounter went with a tick. Poor girl went through hell because of one of them bloodsucking li..... I mean little fvckers.
