Disappointed with new Hornady 45-70 brass.

For calibers where range pickup isn’t an option, or match grade isn’t needed, I typically buy Starline brass.
Unable to locate Starline in 45-70 I bought this bag of Hornady.
Is this typical of Hornady brass?
It’s not really the out of round case mouths that bother me as much as the rough edge of the necks, dents on the sides of a few cases, and black streaks inside the cases.


 
im sorry but you will find many that will say it is acceptable which of course is not. i had issues with 9.3x62 hornady brass so i feel your pain and the time you will need to fix them.
 
are they shorter than standard 45-70 brass as well? I always have to save range-pickup Hornady 45-70 brass and run them as as separate batch because I have to adjust my seating and crimp dies lower
 
I use Hornady brass for zeroing and hunting rifle accuracy. I expect sub par performance when I’m looking for real precision but there are other brass manufacturers for that.

No they are within SAAMI spec. It's their loaded leverevolution ammo that has short brass.
 
Have you seen how dinged up new Winchester brass is lately? I won't even stoop to pick up Hornady at the range.
 
In my experience, dings & case mouth out of round have been common with any brass that come's loose in a box or bag.
I don't like it but I've come to expect, the longer brass has sat around, the more obscure the caliber, the more it's handled, the further it's traveled, the greater the chance damage or manufacture error will occur.

Working thru a bag of 500 - 32-20 Starline brass, some case mouths look the same as the OP's Hornady brass. My first step in resizing to 25-20 is to touch the case mouth with a Lee Universal Expanding die to 'round' the case mouth.

My recent beef with Hornady was with some 308 Marlin Express brass. I collapsed a couple of necks when trying to seat the bullets. The brass out of the box was really hard, needed to be annealed before use.
 
Just run it through a sizer and clean the case mouths up. Manufacturers are pumping stuff out faster than ever to meet demand. This is honestly trivial since the brass will get resized, trimmed and deburred many times in it's life.

That's my thoughts. It shouldn't be so beat that cases fail trying to get them ironed out but you want to run them through an expander or belling die, or trimming mandrel anyway.

People aren't willing to pay the extra for them to come in boxes anymore ore that's what they would do. Isn't that how Lapua is shipped?

In a lifetime of reloading, more than once, I've had a few issues with some Hornady products...brass...bullet tips...dies and micrometer seating stems to name a few. ONE email was all it took and my issues were handled "pronto" ! It's always been stellar customer service for me from Hornady, a RARE bird these days, esp living north of the border !!
 
I had some range .308 brass that was really hard seating primers in, even after running a chamfer into the pockets.
Since it was free, I couldn't ##### too much.
