Hello, I am stumped, how do I take the gas cylinder apart? The bayonet lug on my m14s blocks it. And please educate me on why the rifles are bagged in so much oil? Thanks in advance for your expertise.
 
I believe you have to back the nut out enough so that you can tilt the entire gas system, then the nut will come off completely and you can dangle the gas system from the barrel.

Taking off the flash hider I believe is the only way you're going to get that thing off completely, but that's not necessary if you just want to clean it (with brake cleaner)

Ya, clean off any carbon and make sure it is dry when you reassemble it. They are packed in oil to protect them from the elements and transport. Dont forget some of these rifles were assembled ages ago and stored until shipped here. No big deal to clean it off and relube with grease etc.
 
To get it out is easy .

I dont have those flash hiders mounted on mine anymore but if I remember correctly , unscrew the plug and move the gas cylinder lock to the side a bit and then the gas plug will be able to be removed .

If the bayonet lug is still in the way
Just remove the gas plug and then unscrew the gas cylinder lock .Move the gas cylinder forward and then move it to the side.
Now you can take the gas piston out of the cylinder as the bayonet lug will not be in the way.

A can of brake cleaner works great to get rid of all the packing oil , just remember to wipe it down after with a little gun oil

Take the stock off and put your rifle in a vice (pad the receiver) .You then need to remove the set screw on the front of the sight and then take a pair of caslenutut pliers and unscrew the castlenut until it contacts the front of the opening.
Take a punch and place it on the bayonet lug and hit the punch with a hammer to move the flashider forward and contacts the castlenut , unscrew the nut some more and tap the flashider forward again .
Repeat this until it comes off

NOTE :
If the flashider was not spot welded on it will come off easy... if it was spot welded it doesnt come off as easy but the procedure is the same.
Dont be afraid to hit the punch hard until the spot welds break.
The last Shorty I got it wasnt spot welded on .
I have removed 8-9 like this with no damage to the flashider or rifle.

hey, it's BUILT THAT WAY- the piston "tail" has a flat side on top so you can put it in correctly IN THE DARK - even the usgis are semi-circular- your flat should be on the top and fall through the cylinder- if you misassemble it, it won't repeat properly
you can MAKE castle nut pliers from those "funny" shaped vise grips and a grinder- or slip ring pliers

Update, the key was to move the piston back so I could swivel the front piece out of the way which creates a bigger gap between the bayonet lug and the gas cylinder.
