Good Day mate, Gidday..

So after the last few threads I settled ona 338 federal T3, I will be waiting about a month at this stage, no drama.

so I think ill start by using cup an core 200-210 grain projectiles and most likely Varget powder.... from what I hear the bigger 250grainers and even 225 can take up considerable powder space, seeing as this rifle just needs around 2400 fps for its purpose, whats some items I should be lookin at, projectile wise?

its used for the Elk sized game (sambar) strictly. back pack , walk all day rifle.

pretty keen actually!!

Thanks
WL

338 bullets have the advantage of higher ballistic coefficients than comparable 358 bullets in the same bullet weights (but less cross-sectional area so less shock delivery).

I have loaded my 338 Win. Mag. Ruger Hawkeye down to 338 Federal speeds using IMR4064 and 250gr bullets (~2450 fps MV). I was trying to reduce muzzle blast with the muzzle brake attached using ~55grs of powder vs. ~70grs of slow burning powder. It worked.

After I changed out that awesome Ruger trigger with a fine quality Jard trigger I got pretty decent accuracy. My rifle prefers Hornady 250gr SP bullets.

See now you bought a tikka and you have another dilemma .. Tikka has 1 action length ... So to rechamber or not to rechamber .... Whatever the 338 federal can do the 338/06 can do better lol
The 338 federal is a nice round though

That would certainly help out with the heavier bullets! Will a 338-06 clean up a 338 fed chamber completely?

I'd look at H4895, it will get more velocity than Varget in this cartridge with less load compression. IMR 8208xbr is another good choice

yeh well that's a fair possiblility fellas down the track certainly, esp just to lob the 250s a bit 'quicker' an not cram the powder... 338-06 sound good!

yep a Tikka... so can change a few things incl magazine an get a bit better performance!

ADI AR2206H shows lower pressure and slightly faster numbers via ADIs info, what does the shorter tube likely prefer, a faster powder or what?

not super limited with powder choice down under, so if someone thinks one is just preferred for say 225 gr (woodleighs) and the 18? tube

Thanks

I used to own a T3 Lite Stainless in .338 Federal, great little gun, probably should have never sold it but you know how it goes! Mine would shoot the Federal Premium 185 Barnes Triple Shock load into 3/4'' , everything else it would spew into shotgun like patterns !! Then Federal quit loading it !!!! Down the road she went !!!
Ah, well ! Everything I shot with that load and gun fell over dead like right now ! 2 elk, 4 mule deer, 1 great big black bear, and 6 whitetail deer. If you are handloading, try that 185 Barnes Tripleshock, load it to the gills with that IMR4895 or IMR8208XBR for 2700fps, and you will kill everything you ever point that gun at, no problem.

gday Cole, that's good to hear!

I wont be able to afford to feed it TSX variants, but most likely Woodliegh and then hornady stuff, Woodleigh do a 180gr 338 bullet that's not as hard as the win mag stuff, probly a good start!
big harder 3006?

You guys must think I'm crazy..

I live in small town right, so I don't internet bank an stuff,,, the lady didn't answer this morning on the 338 federal Call up for Bank details... ok no worries- you will have to wait until Monday for me to visit an open bank.

Came home from wok this afternoon, Old mate has emailed and offered a lower price on the Tikka T3 9.3................. with a Scope... its only a Zeiss Terra 3-9, but the Rifle has done no work.. he has bought a 300win mag since. Cool.

Going to make a decision over the night and ring them both tomorrow with a Verdict..

Go with the 9.3mm, you won't regret it.

Gday mate, I think you are right, its THE same as the Whelen in power department, but in the Tikka its almost as light as my Kimber Montana 7mm08.. Initially a T3 with a custom 35 Whelen barrel would be my Go, regarding having all the Reloading gear for it... but a Tikka platform, in a ballistic twin of the Whelen just makes sense over the "pumped up" 308 being the 338 Federal!

232gr is closer to 250 than 210 :) but il look at 250gr Woodleighs!

Sometimes, slower is better. Not having fast internet access with immediate response can sweeten many a deal when seller is impatient.

Thanks! Hawkeye's are great rifles. I just wish Ruger would offer a discounted price trigger-less option. :p

338/06 should rechamber without setting the barrel back , no different than rechambering a 308 to 30/06

Grit; A 30-06 reamer will not clean up a 308 Winchester chamber without setting the barrel back. The 308 at the shoulder is larger in diameter than is the 30-06 case at that
same point, measured from the base. If you ream to 30-06 without setting the barrel back, it will leave a "ring" right where the shoulder of the 308 case ended. D.

yeah that is correct, i forgot the 308 had slightly less taper, barrel would have to be set back, or perhaps run the improved version. which usually is not worth the trouble
