Dispatching a Groundhog - What would you use?

Exactly:

"A .22 is more then adequate. A CCI quiet is actually pretty quiet, if you're worried about noise, but in my experience the first shot is never really questioned, while subsequent ones may be."

One shot from a 22 will raise heads and people will look, listen for another noise, to figure out what it was. If there is no second shot, they just carry on.

Are you describing people or a flock of Ruffed Grouse being .22'd out of a birch tree?! ;)

An accurately placed head shot with a .22lr will be sufficient for a humane kill. As for noise I wouldn’t worry about it if you are legal to discharge a firearm in the area. I shoot all the time here in cottage country and never had a problem. It’s not against the law and people should get used to firearms being discharged legally and safely.

Well here is my suggestion and some may say cruel and needlessly violent but it will get the job done.........Play Justin Bieber music.......

If you want to kill it, one .22 round isn't going to attract much attention. If you just want it to go away, dump a handful of mothballs down each hole.

I am on wood chuck # 7 this summer, have used what ever is handy 22lr, SKS, 308(good for 200+ meter chucks), last one was nailed with an antique Colt SAA all worked equally well.

22 subsonic with an oil filter silencer . Better yet what is your address , I'll handle it for you , no charge .

Wow, a plethora of sage advice and comedians............gotta love CGN..............By the by, I have never seen one of these critters, but have done in a few of their mountain going relatives, 7 Mag and 300 Win work wonderfully but that's all the experience I have to offer.

A hollow point high velocity .22 LR is all you need and it carries a good humane margin of killing power too, as long as you can get within good range of the critter (as it seems you can). I've used a gas bomb on one occasion, when a woodchuck had positioned itself in a place where it wasn't safe to shoot with anything, but since I have the luxury of enough time to be sentimental I don't regard them as humane- I would not want to die in the fumes from burning sulfur. Same with a car exhaust, unless, again, shooting was unsafe. Speaking of safety- because of the possibility of ricochet, shooting into the ground with a larger calibre round carries a lot more risk than a .22 LR, but use what is needed.

I use smoke bombs from PeavyMart. Light it, toss it in the hole, then cover the hole. It makes 25 cubic feet of toxic sulfur smoke that kills small animals, rodents, and insects such as wasps and hornets. It only takes a few minutes to dissipate and won't harm humans or large animals.

Now that's a great idea for hard to get pests. Never seen a PeavyMart here in Ontario; like the idea for ground bees. What brand or kind of smoke bomb do you use?

I also have a rat under my deck, cant shoot him in my subdivision wonder if this would work on him.

Find a store that caters to farmers. Tractor Supply Company would be a good guess, but you might have to go deep rural. And according to what people have posted elsewhere, the Ontario population of the critters has experienced a deep decline in recent years, so what is sold will for that reason not be well stocked. What you get is basically sulfur and probably some fuel providing chemical in a paper container that will smolder- burn and give off sulfur dioxide and similar gasses.

I would use a Mauser chambered in .458 lott. If the neighbors mention anything, say you read somewhere that the military were testing a new artillery piece somewhere nearby.
