What's better for killing city squirrels: flat, round or pointed head pellets?

I will be using an old Slavia 624 piston pump rifle in .177 caliber or an old Crosman pistol (if I can repair the seals) in .22 caliber.

Or something else? I seem to recall having .177 caliber darts when I was a kid. Thanks,

Which ever pellets are the most accurate out of your gun but before you proceed you better check that;

A) You are allowed to kill the species of squirrel in question.
B) There are no local by-laws prohibiting what you want to do where you want to do it

Red squirrels are considered fur bearers in Ontario, and you need a trapper's licence to "harvest" ( hate that word!) unless you utilize the 3-S rule.

I've trapped one already. No license needed. These are city squirrels - pests in other words. But there are more now, they've wised up to the trap. Don't want them wintering in my attic.

Not too worried about accuracy, I'll be shooting at 15' max. I'll be checking with the police so not to have the SWAT team show up.

What pellets penetrated best?

There are usually provisions in the provincial regs that allows for the "dispatching" of nuisance animals without a licence that are causing or about to cause damage to your property.

Here in Ontario it's in section 31 or the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act

Protection of property
31.##(1)##If a person believes on reasonable grounds that wildlife is damaging or is about to damage the person’s property, the person may, on the person’s land,
(a) harass the wildlife for the purpose of deterring it from damaging the person’s property; or
(b) capture or kill the wildlife. 1997, c.#41, s.#31#(1).
Agents
(2)##The person may use an agent to harass, capture or kill the wildlife under subsection (1) if the agent has the authorization of the Minister or belongs to a class of agents prescribed by the regulations. 1997, c.#41, s.#31#(2).

Quieter then any pellet gun I've ever used

I think that it is more important to test different pellets and go with the one that gives you and your rifle the best accuracy/precision at the ranges that you will be shooting at.

I always felt the rounded nose type was better for killing things. Forget the darts. I remember them as well. pretty cool idea, but even at close range they tend to be FAR less accurate. I shot lots of targets with those things, but don't remember actually hitting any of the critters I tried for.

Get them squirrels!!! If your able to shoot it should be .22 all the way. But if not... You need to find the squirrel hotel (mass of pine cone shreds with a million squirrel holes in it) and put up sticks with peanut butter and SNARES. Much cheaper and effective.

I sent a good many red squirrels to their maker with a CO2 pistol, Crosman I think it is. It looks a way too close to a S&W 4956 like I carried, but a bit longer. One shot would bring them down and another to make sure. I also fixed a fair few with a BB gun.

I hate red squirrels.

I had good luck with a crossman Nitro dusk in 177 with pointed pellets. 8 out of 10 they die on the spot. Never got any complaints from the neighbours. I bait them with peanuts, monkey nuts, hazelnut and go to town. On a few occasion I had over penetration so be careful of your background.

The Slavia is underpowered...and squirrels are tough.

You don't want to wound them...and you will with an underpowered pellet rifle.

Do yourself a favour and buy a Gamo pellet rifle. They shoot about 1200 ft/sec and will give you an accurate shot time after time. I have one for the kids and with any pellet it will finish a small furry beast.

Those cheap 500 ft/sec and under will be good just to possibly hurt but don't do a good job finishing the job.

Just my 2 cents
