Dispatching squirrels (need to send them to their maker)

At 15 feet, it does not matter what pellet you use as long as you are using a standard air rifle> 495 ft/sec. I have allegedly killed a racoon at 40 yards with one shot and crows as well, although I was using a high power 177 cal. I have a new respect for high power air rifles.

red squirells can only be taken by a licenced trapper. shooting with an air rifle or .22 inside the city is illegal

I was told by a guy at a gunshow in the US that if you want to shoot something in your yard and you don't want to neighbours to hear then get someone to fire up a chain saw. it's all you going to hear. chain saw in the front yard 22 or pellet rifle in the back yard.

Reds are absolutely terrible critters. They all have to go!!

I need to figured out something quiet this fall, got tree huggers on either side of me! Last fall the squirrels found a way in, it's been plugged up since but don't want them trying again!

That 624 piston pump rifle new, only had 350fps. Look for a 500 to 600 fps rifle and with accurate pointed pellets it will do the job for tree rats, crows, gophers and any other small critter.

What's better for killing city squirrels: flat, round or pointed head pellets?

I will be using an old Slavia 624 piston pump rifle in .177 caliber or an old Crosman pistol (if I can repair the seals) in .22 caliber.

Or something else? I seem to recall having .177 caliber darts when I was a kid. Thanks,

These are my go to round, available at SFRC and maybe elsewhere. Quieter than any decent pellet gun, when fired from a .22 rifle but have more than enough punch to do the job (last rodent I shot was a through and through) but not enough penetration to go through wood; say your backyard fence. I have a couple of rounds sitting flush in my garage door frame to prove that! LOL They won't cycle a semi-auto, but if your alternative is a pellet gun, its still a quicker reload.
The video doesn't really do it justice, the report and impact sounds meld together. Worth noting that the sound of racking the action is louder than the shot!

Rifle is a Ruger 10/22 carbine.

IT"S NOT SQUIRREL SEASON YOU FOOL!!!

Why do people insist on carelessly destroying Ontario's glorious, natural resources?

My old neighbor made a house for them. He put sheet metal on the floor. He got a metal dish, and put cork on the bottom on the outside, and filled it with dog kibble. He hooked the whole works up to a 110 cable. He had a switch on the back porch, and whenever he saw a squirrel go into the house, he would hit the switch. I never actually saw it in action, but the neighbor on the other side said he did pretty good with it

It isn't, and I don't normally. However, when you have a family of them coming and going from your roof vents and you can hear them every night tearing the insulation out of your vaulted ceiling it's a different matter. When that happens it's war, though I suppose you would just let that happen to your home for the glory of nature!?

As SOULCHASER pointed out earlier:

Here in Ontario it's in section 31 or the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act

Protection of property
31.##(1)##If a person believes on reasonable grounds that wildlife is damaging or is about to damage the person’s property, the person may, on the person’s land,
(a) harass the wildlife for the purpose of deterring it from damaging the person’s property; or
(b) capture or kill the wildlife. 1997, c.#41, s.#31#(1).

Which ever pellets are the most accurate out of your gun but before you proceed you better check that;

A) You are allowed to kill the species of squirrel in question.
B) There are no local by-laws prohibiting what you want to do where you want to do it

1) ssS
2) See above....

The chewing and tearing of the insulation is one thing .
The other is when they are chewing the rafters or trusses...then there is the wire insulation to consider too.
Had squirrels in the space between the ceiling and the roof on the third floor apartment and could hear them working away for hours at times.
Management had pest control do some recon and then blocked the entry/exit hole.

Asking for advice here is going to offer two types.
Kill the suckers Dead (Thank you Kamlooky for this quote)
And others with latent PETA feelings...

A squirrel can be a challenge to DRT with a sub 500 FPS air gun as they can and will crawl back into the hole in your attic and then the smelling problems begin.
Call your local pest guy or set live traps with peanut butter as bait and teach the Tree Rats how to swim in a 25galloon pail ...

Prolly not the answer you where looking for but, you did ask n'est-ce pas ?

I use a slavia 630, with the old canada spring, it wasn't always a clean kill.
With the help of a member here, I got a new spring and seals, and I'm estimating velocity is over 500fps, maybe near 700fps
It kills clean with head shots(red squirrel pests)

Now the important part. What pellets? Unless you got a pellet gun over 1000fps, it makes no difference on shape. They will not expand. Penetration will be the same.
So get whatever is accurate in your airgun.

Red squirrels are cute rats. They've done hundreds of dollars worth of damage to our property, along with minor damage that require a large amount of time for clean up.
Disgusting.

Killing squirrels in a high population is like sweeping a dirt floor. I've cleaned out nests in attics only to catch a squirrel a day for the next 12 days.

I could shoot ten a day in my forested backyard Id just open the territory for 10 more. They will populate accordingly, without exclusion the death of one squirrel just invites another.

I clean off a 50 acre island once every 5-6 years of reds..take dozens, don't see any for 4 years then whammo..dozens show up at once..

But hey..you gotta do something. I'm in the club that sub 500fps pellet guns aren't enough..and that shooting that or greater in the city is questionable, but ya know a big yard and reasonable neighbors..you know better than we do.

I have thought about using those, but I was afraid they would carry farther than your average pellet gun.

They do carry further fer sure, but out of a 24" barrel as in a CZ 452 Lux, these do in tree rats, stray cats & rabbits just fine inside of 30 yds. or so. The bonus is, they make less noise than a brad nailer. Ensure your
backstop before sniping.:)
