Upper coming any day.

They are cast in Czechoslovakia and finnished in Canada. Both Counties are marked on the opposite side. Blue Line took over my local gunshop(sureshot) that got "rail roaded" by the RCMP and have a clean/friendy sporting store appearance with no "team glock" banners... Until you go into the back and see all the tactical stuff. Much like a video store with a ####o section. I think they're the cheapest on here at 140..

I think you're right about the forging nowdays...The salesguy's or my info could be wrong. Here's an interesting site on the making of receiver parts from solid forgings.

[...pic snip...]

Anyway, i have my upper(thanks Arms East), magpul buttstock and barrel wrench. Things should start moving fast now.

Justin cut the upper in your upper (above) pic from billet... a solid (rectangular) block of aluminum... the lower looks like a forging however as you can see some flash down the front of the mag well. He cuts lowers from billet as well, and also sells a jig for finishing 80% lowers from forgings (and / or castings).

All of the major AR manufacturers in North America (including Colt, and with the exception of Armalite I believe) get their forged uppers and lowers from one of a couple of different forges, and they all have them cut by one of four companies (most of whom we never hear about and wouldn't recognize the names if we did)... The biggest difference between any two major manufacturers receivers aside from where the tool marks are, are the roll marks (brand).

It looks like I'm going to build a true dissipator rifle after all. I just scored a 16" barrel off the off the EE.
Just a couple parts left and we'll see how it shoots. :dancingbanana:

I was under the impression that the "dissy" upper was a rifle length gas system with a short barrel?????

The very first generation ones were.

But they found it caused too many problems (under pressure) since when the bullet passed the gas port, by the time the gas is in the gas tube the bullet it out of the barrel and pressure is dropping.

The "point" of the dissipator was to have the full length handguards and a hidden gas block underneath. That way you get the barrel totally hidden and a full sight radius, but the front "gas block/iron sight" is JUST for an iron sight, and to hold the handguard.

Well, its a big heavy 16" dpms barrel with a full length gas system. I believe the gas port is extra large. I'm waiting on the gas tube. I'm aiming to have this one together by the weekend. I think with the right buffer weight it should work fine.

I guess if you increased the gas volume (as opposed to pressure) it could still work. But there's not a lot of room left after the gas port.

I spose you could always weld the front gas port closed, then drill a mid-length gas system, if you find you're having too many problems.

Thanks. I checked out the link. Pricey and i doulbt they'll ship to us terrorist lovers. They do look great, but,i was going for an old school handguard look. They seem to only sell free floating handguards all railed out. I'm not the kind of guy that goes to the range with flashlights and s**t all over my guns. i actually put this one together for under a grand.

There is one company that makes a "free float AR15 factory handguard adapter".

Essentially its a tube that screws into the barrel nut, and has an front handguard mounting point at the front. So when you put the handguard on, it doesn't touch the barrel or gas block at all. Im not sure how rigid or robust the system is though, lemme see if I can find it.....

Looks like DPMS makes one (150-ish US, but it looks like it includes handguards) Not 100% sure if its the same one as I described or not. But since DPMS makes it, Wolverine should be able to grab ahold of one for you...

So, I finally put the thing together(minus the delta ring) used a hair band to hold the stock together. I ran some about 200 55 gr fiocchi and American eagle ammo through it and had great results. Not one stoppage. Matter of fact, it was a pleasure to shoot.
I didn't bother with zeroing the rifle figuring i have to take the barrel off for the delta ring install anyway.
I wasn't impressed with the magpul parts. The ctr stock feels loose and the Back up plastic sights are neat, but too big an apperature (i do like how they snap up). The full size sight radius of the dissipator carbine is great. I'll go with an a2 full stock and better rear irons later. I was impressed overall. I think i'll keep this one.
