I was shooting at the public homestead range west of Calgary today. The 100 yard targets seemed to be a bit over 100 yards. My rough estimate (pacing) measured it closer to 110 yards. Am I wrong or can anyone help me with this.

Old school ---> 100 yards...
New school --> 100 meters...

A yard is 3 feet iirc, a meter is 3.3 feet iirc, so there'in is the difference... The only problem I "see" here, with sighting in, is if they state yards and it's actually meters or vice versa...

Cheers
Jay

I was there on Labour Day and ranged it at 103 yards with my Leica.

BTW the shooting station tops sure need replacement, anybody in charge of that, I'd be willing to volunteer to change a top or 2.

Jay, the public range is maintained (poorly, since it does not generate any income) by the APRA. It's is part of the lease agreement to maintain the public range. That said, if there are target frames to hang a target on and no one has burned down the picnic tables, your lucky.

Personally, I would not go near that place, too un-safe, seen a guy firing at 25yds with a high power rifle when two guys were standing at the 100 yds target frame (circa 1999 or 2000). I was there to see the shape of the range for the guy that kept it up/clean and I told this joker to stop firing and he said "Why, they are over there and I'm firing here!!!" I have not been to the public range since!!

Funny thing no one shot this guy and left him in a hole...somewhere

If you want better, join one of the clubs out there, either Rosebud or the fullbore club.

You can afford a Leica range finder and choose to shoot at the public Homestead range? Why not buy a membership to a real range :confused:

Dont get me wrong, just a bit confused. I hate free public ranges or garbage dumps as I like to call them ;)

Point taken,
I did have a membership with the CSRA for a couple of years but didn't get out much as I worked out of town all the time so I let it drop. I've since quit that job and am now working locally (about time!) and plan to re-up shortly if possible. As for the public range, Just trying to do my part in being a good neighbor.

I would add that it is in bad shape, not because it is poorly maintained by the APRA, but because a**holes destroy it.

Fully agreed Mike! I guess you could say public ranges are kind of like public land, people will just keep destroying them untill they are taken away from us :mad:

Last time I was there a guy was drinking a can of bud. I couldn't believe my eyes. :eek:
After the all night mess I had to deal with out there Saturday night of the labour day weekend I would suggest that anyone thinking they can have beer on the public range may be in for a ticket or two. As I understand the RCMP will be patrolling that road much more often day and NIGHT to stop the drinking and throwing the cans out along that road, as well as the after dark shooting - drinking parties that have been getting worse. If the APRA cleaned that range every week it would look the same. Why in the Hell do these guys need to haul in couches, tv's, computers, bags of salt, cases of full cans of pop, propane bottles, co2 bottles, beer cans, pop cans, pickle jars. ketchup bottles, chairs, oranges, apples, peaches, watermelons, mattresses, maniquin's, cardboard boxes,need I go on. The only thing I haven't seen hauled in is road signs, and I guess that is because they can use them all the way in and all the way out. If you know anyone doing the above things give them fair warning THE POLICE ARE GOING TO BE OUT THERE MUCH MORE OFTEN. If all I had was the public range to shoot at I would try and show some appreciation to the people who made that possible and take my garbage home with me.

Thanks Kodiak
We as the APRA do put money into the Courtesy Range IE Public Range but do to the Fact that there are many Mentally Handicapped shooters that take immense pleasure in shooting the Shooting Benches ,Fence posts, Road Signs ,The APRA sign that was at the entrance to the public range and Burning of garbage barrels shooting of said Barrels . Not to mention the 7cubic yards of Garbage that is collected each month. We the APRA are at wits end and so are the RCMP as they respond to many calls from Shooters about unsafe firearms handling and from reports of Vandalism .That they are going to put forward to the Alberta Government that the Public Range be closed and the majority of the APRA executive are in Favour of closing the K Country Fee Fire zone for good.

It is amazing to me that we provide a range for free and it is abused in this fashion. I would hope that if the range is closed a gate would be placed as far up the road as possible to keep everyone but members out. Otherwise they will continue to do what they do best. Four of them were caught on the september long weekend. I can't say more than that until charges are laid and they are done in court, but it was at 230 in the morning and scared the hell out of nine competitors and family members who were camped there.

Just wait until all the B++++ing and Whining starts when it gets closed. It is people like those who just think they are above the rules. Guys like those should loose there rights as a firearm owner.

It is really no different here in Brandon but I would like to think that we are starting to get a handle on the situation. It basically costs nothing to use the Brandon Wildlife Range but there are still people who abuse the facility from time to time. The biggest issue is the shooting up of the safety baffles which are about 25 yards down the line from the benches. Those were installed due to regulations. It was done by volunteer and a lot of sweet talking to get used Hydro poles and bridge timbers. Signs are posted saying NO PLACING OF TARGETS OR SHOTING AT THE SAFETY BAFFLES. Guess what, people cannot read. Bottom line I await the day that they need replacing or the range is shut down because the baffles are shot up that it is unsafe. I believe that the poles are about 600.00 and I have no idea to the bridge timbers cost.
