wondering how important this dimension is? I installed a take off bbl, and after headspacing, the bbl markings are about 180 degrees off. didn't surprise me, but now I'm thinking about it. couldn't find much info on the web about it, except that it should be almost touching. I haven't measured mine yet, so what do you say?

End of bolt nose 5 thou minimum, 10 thou maximum.

It is important, too much leaves too much of the case out of the chamber, the more out, the weaker the brass becomes.

Installing a take off barrel requires extra work in that you index the barrel first then calculate and machine your shank dimensions.

sorry, should have mentioned it is a savage 110. once I measure the distance, if it's too long, does that mean the chamber would need to be cut deeper?

Most (all) factory actions are not threaded the same, ie the thread does not start in the same place. For this reason even though the HS is correct the engraving can be wrong. This goes for barrels as well. If you want to get a rough but normally adequate measure from the bolt to the end of the barrel put some tape on the end of the barrel and trim around. The best tape for this is polypropylene. The stuff I have is 2.5 thou and does not readily compress. Keep adding layers until you can't close the bolt. Measure the depth of the lugs first and then measure again with the tape. This way if you crush the layers you will get a useful number.

Savage bolt heads are tumbled after machining and as a result they have up to a .002" dish to them. If you measure depth at center you will likely read .117" but the perimeter will read .115".
As Dennis mentioned, the barrels are machined to have .125" case protrusion so the gap between the bolt face and barrel is .010". These numbers are very consistent from factory and I have never measured any out more than .001" or .002". You can find lots of rifles with bolt head marks on the barrel. Savage heads float, an uncocked bolt can move further forward until either the bolt handle hits the action or the bolt face hits barrel. Short ammo makes the gap smaller.
