Distance shooters. What power optics?

I've been leaving my S3 8-32x on 32, have it be 300 or 800m, but on another range at 200yard sometimes the mirage it so bad because of how its set up that I gotta turn it down some.
There's certainly instances where a little more magnification wouldn't hurt so long as image stays pretty good and also easy to find where to put your eye to see through it.

were this true the majors would not be making the big power scopes. they work and work well if its what you need. 12-42, is a very nice long range scope most 22 br is shot above 30 power at 50 yards no less. some competitive 10M air rifle comps are shot at minimum 25 power. lets face it, the higher the mag the easier it is to see the target, unless mirage appears, which is not always the case.

The majors meet perceived needs (markets) not necessarily actual needs. Having very high magnification can be nice, but you are adding weight, height from your bore axis, and you are loosing field of view, so the scope becomes more a case of a specialized and dedicated long range only scope. Not at all a bad thing, just like everything, it is subject to the rule of diminishing returns. Otherwise why not contact Meade instruments and get a nice big dobsonian telescope with a Horus reticle hmmmm?

Ours as in CAF Snipers. Only this week did we get brand new 5-25 S and Bs with the A1 special reticle. I've been installing them all week

One for those distance shooters out there. What power optics are you running to shoot out to 1000m ?

Looks like OP asked about a dedicated 1000yd/m scope so the advice he has been given is fitting for the intended use....

It was built specificly for us. Its a slightly larger P4L fine. P4L fine reticle is 0.03 mils wide and the A1 is 0.04 mils wide

Ours meaning who's? All the C14s I've shot or seen all had 5-25s on them.

The S&B 3-12 where on the (DMR) C7CT rifles over here...

I can assure u that the original issue C14's had the 3-12 on them. But before a deployment or a competition we would pull a 5-25 from a fifty and slap it on the Timberwolf. Now the 3-12s will go on the new Coyote when we get them.

Trust me military snipers would be using more magnification if they had the choice. It really helps hit your target better, guys can hit 1000 yards with open sights, on occasion, so what. its a whole lot easier to do with good magnification. It used to be 308 was enough power, then 300wm now 338, as big glass gets better and prices come down a bit, it will get used more. there is NO downside to getting a better view of the target, and that view is better obtained with higher quality glass and more magnification.

You are right in some aspects. But u are also wrong. Mirage and a narrow field of view are a snipers nightmare. Its all good for a static range when tgts don't move. 8-10 real life tgts are not stationary and if u zoom in to max power and can't ambush properly you will miss guaranteed. Now take into consideration that we JUST received fine reticles. On max magnification with the old P4L the tgts would be completely blocked out by the friggin reticle. I don't need to be anywhere near max magnification because my spotter right beside me is on 25x making the calls anyway. I could never ever see myself needing more than 25x
