Questions for Goose hunters.
I know ducks after being shot can dive under water and lodge them selves under something or grab grass and get lock jaw. then they die and are stuck unerwater. Seen it happen. How ever. This weekend I shot a goose from my boat, it was hit! it then proceeded to fly down the the waters surface. I started up my boat and headed over. suddenly, the goose was gone. It dit NOT fly away. this was in the midle of the lake and I did not take my eyes off of it. anyone know if Geese dive like ducks? and maybe get lcok jaw after death under water on grass or a twig? Any idea's? I'm baffled!

I have seen geese dive under. I chased one in a canoe for 30 minutes once as he was diving under me. Never seen them hang onto something before though. I know they can dive under the water and swim quite far while under.

They dive, and can cover a fair distance under water. Like daveg01, I have chased them for quite a long time in a canoe. In rough water it's a challenge as they lay low between the swells and then dive again and again.

last fall we knocked down 5 geese out of a flock only to have 3 of them dive and completely disappear ! i waded around for an hour looking for them but never found them . bothered me ever since

I guess anything can dive under water if something is trying to catch and kill it. I've never seen anything dive like a canvasback...and no, I have not shot sea ducks!

First goose I ever shot did this and lead me on a merry chase around the lake... I ended up having to go back to shore and get my shotgun. When I got back to the goose with the 12ga the chase came to an abrupt end ;)

I've seen them diver for quite a bit. I usually just sit back in the boat and watch for a minute until it bleeds out a little then give chase. I find that they don't flag around as much if you just give them a min to die.

I have had it happen with Snow Geese, Canada Geese and Black Brant as well.
If in a power boat look for bubbles from the air escaping from the feathers and breath as well.
Circle the bird till it is forced to come up for air.
In a Canoe or kayak I have no idea but you better be fast.
Also, make sure your gun is unloaded when chasing the wounded bird or the CO will have a field day with you.
Good Luck,
Rob
