DIY 10/22 Charging Handle

Thought I would share this little mod I just did in case anyone else is interested in trying something similar. I was in need of an oversized charging handle for one of my 10/22's but also wanted something unique. In the past I've used .40S&W casings but this time I went with a Craftsman 5/16" socket. I suppose PowerFist would work but it wouldn't be as classy as Craftsman or SnapOn.

The mod itself is pretty easy. First I took the dremel to the original handle as it wouldn't quite fit into the 5/16" opening. A little off the top and bottom and it soon it was able to slide right in. Then I just filled the socket with JB Weld and added a little to the handle as well for good measure and combined the two. Wiped off all the excess JB and let it cure. Then just to clean it up cosmetically I cut out a 1/4" square of metal from a washer and epoxied it in place in the middle of the socket.







Maybe not as nice as the Superior Concepts handle but it's unique and it saved me $40!
 
That's a little harsh. I'd ask the OP to watch for any extra wear on the internals adding the extra weight on the stock handle. I'm kicking myself for spending the $45 on a power customs handle. It's to heavy for my taste. Should have got a skeltonized handle.
If I was doing your mod, I might have gone with a colored snap on socket for extra flair.
 
It's all good - I appreciated the candidness and thought it was funny! I had never considered possible adverse effects based on added weight. Maybe I'll try it for a bit, see it how it goes, and then consider buying an aftermarket one. It was never about being too cheap to buy one (I've owned many 10/22's and have spent thousands in the past) - just thought I'd try something different this time.
 
I think it was pretty clever of you and if you ask me, your efforts paid off, it looks pretty good. Keep us posted on the reliability, some others might want to try what you did.
 
It is creative, I suggest one of those black sockets or an even less popular coloured one. Hopefully the added weight does not cause extra cycling wear.
 
Good job... Folks on RFC have been using sockets for years, but many run into rebound issues... You might have to adjust your spring...

Did you just epoxy that case on your mag release? That sir is bad ass, and I want one...now
 
Love DIY mods, so much more satisfying than cookie cutter bolt-ons. I need to shenanigate some kind of extended mag release for mine. I just got done modifying my TI charging handle and PC extractor in the hopes that they stop causing so many fracking malfunctions and get the damn rifle running as good as it does with the 25 yr old OE parts. You'd think upgrade parts would be better than OE...
 
Copied your mag release, used a .45 acp I took from the range in montana after a round with the thompson ;)
