DIY Caribou, Yellowknife area?

Hey all,

Headed up to Yellowknife for a week around Christmas, and as far as i know, that is caribou season up there. Any way a guy can get out and do some hunting, be it with a resident or alone? I know of some people who might take me out, if a resident is required, or is it absolutely required for an Albertan to hire a guide? I'm not talking trophy barren ground critters, just the local woodland ones within a short drive of the city.
 
I dont know if the rules have changed, but when i was up there you had to hire an outfitter, and I believe the non res season closes in NOV some time, but you would have to check the regs.
 
Just the local woodland ones??? woodland caribou are much more scarce than barren ground, and as far as I've ever heard, ALL non-residents must book a hunt with an outfitter in he NWT. If it was so easy to hunt woodland caribou as a non-resident a great many people would be doing it. How about reading the regs?
 
Yup, I've lived up here for 10 years, and I've only seen one small group of 7 and that was a 4 hour drive south of here. You do have to hire a guide/outfitter . I am unsure of the rest of the regs, but they are easily gotten online.
 
Definately NO woodland caribou around Yellowknife, straight barrenland. And still you'll probably have to wait till the lakes freeze up to get out and see them.

yup, last year was a crappy year for the caribou, as they seemed to barely swing through, and our quota was cut from 5 any ###, to 2 male. Its hit or miss the last few years with the diamond mine ice roads cutting their migration path directly in half.
Woodland caribou are closer to the south, near fort providence and fort liard. At least 4 hours drive south.
 
You do need an Outfitter to hunt big game up here.....but you can purchase a small game license I believe (ptarmigan/grouse/rabbits)....all in good numbers this year.

It would be barrenground caribou around YK but due to fires a few years back they are not that close....mostly passing by. You're better off way East of town or NW of Edzo.

We snowmobiled to Gordon Lake last weekend and saw very little caribou sign. Was told later by ENR that they are still 50 miles NW of Gordon and on the way....pretty stinky right now but will be good in a couple of weeks....was kinda hoping to find a monster with a nice cape.....antlers are dropping off as we speak
