So ive noticed a few people looking for someone to loan out castle nut pliers to them. I was in the same boat not wanting to spend $30 bucks to get a pair of em out of the states. (Id rather spend it on ammo, and am an avid fan of Hungarys welfare approach to things)

Quick trip to crappy tire and I walk out with $4 pair of elchepo job mate slip joint pliers. Sorry for the poor quality pics, lent my camera to a friend and had to use my cell. For this project i used a dremel, bench grinder and a vise.
You are also going to want to have a container of water to cool em off as you go.

First thing you have to decrease the width of the jaws. I used a dremel with a cut off wheel to cut a step in. Cut them slightly wider than you need to fit between the slot in the castle nut and the flash suppressor. Should look something like this. You can see the "L" shaped chunck missing from the right side of the jaws.

Next thing is to cut some slots in the face of the jaws. Using the cut off wheel, go about 1/8'' deep 1/8'' wide. Someting along the lines of this.

Now time for the bench grinder. You want to grind off the serations on the inside jaw faces so that they are flushish to the slots you cut earlier. Go slow, don't try to remove alot of material at once or you will soften the steel from the heat. Its a good idea to have a container or water to cool them off frequently.

Now remember how you left the width of the jaws big? You now have to grind them down a small amount. Check the fit on your castle nut frequently so you don't take too much off. Once you have them fitted and they are engaging in the slots in the nut, check for clearance. You may need to grind clearance on the non contact areas of the jaws to prevent they from scratching the barrel or flash suppressor.

All said and done this is what they look like. Took me 15 minutes start to finish.

Good thinking.I was lucky got a bunch of stuff off epay for cheap. So I don't have to go this route. Thanks for showing us the way.

Great idea. I was thinking of doing the same thing but after hearing problems of flash suppressors coming loose, I decided to keep them welded. I snipped the shims and glued them instead.

I made my flash hider pliers a couple of years ago out of a set of el cheapo vice grips from Princess Auto. They work fine, and cost me all of $5.
