DIY, converting a VZ58 fixed stock to a folder.

working with real wood was far more forgiving than the red wood chip version. i have over come some of the deficiencies from the earlier version with the help from a wood carving set and a dremel i purchased.

1. how to connect the two sides .

2. improve/blend the buttplate .

3. getting access to trigger when folded.

this time i had the wood stock cut a wee bit thicker , about 1/16" more than the 3/4" of the red wood chip version and that is bcos i removed the previous finish by circa 1850 and sanding. its too difficult to match the existing shade so its best to go natural .

to line up the buttplate it drop the front end by an 1/8" , to correct that i had to bend the arm up with the help of a torch and a 2 lb hammer (see below).

the folder buttplate is shorter than the normal buttplate so i unfolded the buttplate edges. i gain 1/4" at each ends.

this time i was careful to remove minimal of material. this ensured tightness and ridigity.

-then the two sides was glued and clamped.
-with a grinder , the buttplate was grounded down to size.
-palm sanded and brushed a couple coats of poly.

heres the two versions. left side view.

you sir have earned the seal of absolute bad assery lol!!!! you took your concept from an idea, turned it into a proovable item, and when you had a few suggestions, you took them, ran with it, and added those improvements!!!
i commend you on both your abilities, and your tenacity to get the job done, and done right! your cz is awsome too!!!

round 3 , final round - red wood chips stock .

very nice! they still look like VZs love it!! how did you do the beaver barf folder?

i wasnt very satisfied with the way my first try on the red wood chip turned out , especially after how nice the real wood looked so here im with an improved version .

the red wood chip is difficult to work with , a dremel and a grinder are a must.

to get access to the trigger when folded i had to reshape it but are limited to the shape due to the inners. i had to use a filler wood for the lower part with a sliver of red wood chip to cover it up.

1. cut the stock in half to two equal sides of 3/8".
2. cut rough shape.
3. mod the metal folder's buttplate as shown above and bend the arm about 1/8" , not too much bcos it will block the cocking handle.
4. fit the metal folder in the stock .
5. dremel the front end and make sure it folds and open properly.
6. fit wood filler and the red wood chip sliver.
7. when everything fits properly and the swivel are in.
8. epoxy the two sides and clamp, thanks to those who suggested it .
9. dremel and grind the final shape. go over where you used the dremel and grinder with a palm sander to smoothen out the surface and joints.
10. stain the sanded area with minwax red mahogany and then spray with minwax fast drying poly clear semi-gloss.
11. put a screw on the back of the buttplate so it wouldnt bend when it catches.

This is really impressive. Your first try with the beaver barf stock grafted onto the folder was inspiring, and your 2nd version using full real wood was inspired. Version 3 is truly awesome - I'm one of those people who actually like the "beaver barf" furniture. I feel humble in the face of your ingenuity.

there're alot of talented guys in the red rifles , i hope these DIY would inspire them and do better .
