DIY Decoy Retreiver?

But the pole is 20ft long, thats 3 yards, most set their decoys 20 to 40 yds out, you will still have to get in the water.

Yikes! That math.... egads...

For long range retrieval bring a collapsing or telescopic fishing rod and a floating Rapala plug, cast and retrieve... does not work well though in heavy weeds and blowdowns, but great if the water is fairly clear.

I remember the days of casting out a plug to retrieve birds. Worked well unless the wind was in your face....then it turned into a sh!t show. I would suggest using a leader on the end in case a pike hits the lure. Had that happen and the line broke. Lost the plug and ended up getting soaked retrieving the bird. The good old days!!

Well i'm a good fisherman, so this might be the way to go haha! Thanks for the idea.

Get waders and this pole from Princess Auto. They are about 14.99 when on sale.

Thanks for the suggestion!

If you don't have a sound method of retrieving your downed birds and decoys you should not be out there. Period. That being said get yourself the best waders you can afford and only hunt with the wind in your favor and in areas with water that you can safely wade. When I was a young I lived to hunt ducks and geese. Been there and done it all at one time or another when it comes to duck hunting. The basics and are a decent reliable gun, and chest waders if your just starting out. Let other folks play with the poles.
If your area is small water, ponds, marshes and rivers a well trained dog is invaluable, I went through 4 labs in my duck/geese and pheasant hunting days. If your hunting big water for divers a boat is a necessity as a basic and leave the waders at home. That's the only time a hooked pole comes in handy in big water so you can snare the decoy lines from the boat. And a small hoop long handled landing net to scoop downed birds out of the water. When I hunted ponds and marshes, my SX-1, chest waders, small pack, and later on the dog is all you need. Never used decoys except on big water for divers. All my decoys had self leveling weights that I designed and made myself. When picking up the line figure 8 wound around one side of the weight and then slipped over the head of decoy. That way the weights lines and decoys dont end up in a tangled mess. When your setting you just slip the weight off the head and toss it where you want it the weight falls and unravels only the amount of line needed, that way you don't get decoys banging into each other that you have to go and reposition wasting time and effort.

Pine Ridge Pudelpointers. Solve you bird and decoy retrieval problems in one shot;)

Be warned, Pudelpointers are the most inefficient (and likely expensive) way to retrieve ducks and decoys.

After golf season, I take the ball retriever out of the bag, screw in a bike storage hook and use it for dekes.

I suck at both hunting and golf....

Something to keep in mind......

From the migratory birds regulations...

16 (1) No person shall hunt a migratory bird unless he has adequate means for retrieving any such bird that he may kill, cripple or injure.

Waders are your best friend. Even when not wading through the water, you can kneel down in marshy areas and stay dry. This year I bought myself a small waterfowl kayak. No more are the days I am restricted in where to hunt due to bird retrieval.

The only time I can ever think of not needing waders is hunting divers in open water from a boat or hunting fields. Even then a nice pair of neoprene ones will help keep you warm and dry. Invest in nice comfortable ones maybe even 2 sets. Thin for early season, thick for late season.

I use a small 12 “ piece off 1” dowel, and screw a eye in the middle and a trebble hook on each end, a a trebble on each side of the casting eye, not to close or they snah the line, i bought small hobbie eyes from Home hard ware and large split rings,
It all slides in to a piece of Pvc pipe 1.5 in dia, and i cast it with a fishing rod and 20 lb braid.
Can cast about 40 m depending on rod, works great,
I will try get a photo up next couple days.

ah ah my korthals is more clever ... when trained she claimed the rope instead of the lure/decoy ... dogs sometimes lol ...

Extendable paint roller pole/window washing pole, bend a chunk of galvanized electrical conduit and screw it to the end. I've done this and it works excellent! Option #2 is buy a retrieving dog and train it so you won't ever have to go into the water again lol.
