DIY Elcan C79 Nitrogen Purging

Hey everyone,

Just like the title says, I'm planning on doing some work on my C79, but I'll need to recharge the nitrogen (or argon) in the scope after I'm done. I'd like to get this done myself, Armament wants a bit too much for my tastes. Anyone have any sagely wisdom for me?

yeah.... think of Armament as Buckleys cough medicine....

You may wish to leave it "uncharged" ... I have an older Zeiss (Jena) 4x that has nothing but "air" in the tube and it has worked fine in all sorts of conditions. Unless you like to go swimming or take a bath with your optic - and even then brief dips are ok - I think you will be fine with air...assuming it is reassembled and sealed correctly

I wonder how many Leupolds etc etc are actually still holding any nitrogen after 4-5 years anyway.... we just dont know - and it doesnt hurt us

(if you do see signs of fogging you can reconsider) .....but since it's harder for water to get in than gas get out ... if you do see fogging - likely your nitrogen (or Argon) would have been long gone anyway ..

Scopes are not pressurized....the nitrogen is just run in and you can do it yourself with just some nitrogen, a bit of tubing and a foot ball inflation needle, PROVIDED your scope has a charge port. Just have the charge port at the highest level on the scope and run the nitrogen in at a very slow rate...after a moment or two replace the charge port plug.
