I'm making my own extended 223 Savage Axis mag using some of the original parts plus 3d printed body and follower. The spring is made from a piece of steel banding. It has a bit of spring to it but it doesn't quote hold it's form as it.

Can I just heat it up red hot and quench it in oil or water to turn it into spring steel? Anyone have experience doing this?

I'll release the files and how to once it's perfect. It feeds great as is but I think the spring will get week over time.

Somehow your bends look like 2x 90* instead of a nice full rad. I went down this road for my Ruger. This video got suggested to me.





I ended up buying spring wire, and printing out a bender. I can send you a BUNCH of extra wire and the STEP files for the bender if you pay postage.

There's a thought. I think I have a stanag spring making kit somewhere in my archive of files. I could probably adapt it to make the perfect width for the body. I tried a stanag spring but it didn't work out.
 
Not all steel banding is created equal. Most of the banding I've saved in recent years doesn't have enough carbon in it to be heat treatable.
Test by quenching a short piece, if it is brittle then it is usable stock but temperature control with such thin material is tricky. It is all too easy to overheat, creating weak points.
For tempering, the lead bath method gives great temperature uniformity and control.

I like the spring wire suggestions--- far less grief involved in the learning process.
 
After thinking some more, I went back to an AR15 mag spring and redesigned the follower. This one works way better and will be easier to make. I pulled the spring from a 10 round LAR mag but you could make one like Jahnj0584 said or cut down a 30 rounder. This version holds 12.

The next thing I'm going to attempt is a complete DIY mag from the ground up using the same AR15 spring. There's a guy that's selling this exact thing for like $35 plus shipping, which is reasonable, but I'm a big fan of the FOSSCAD life so I'll just post both designs on Odysee and Thingiverse.

I finally finished the completely printed mag.

The only hardware is a M2.5 x 25mm bolt with a nut and a 10 rnd AR15 mag spring but you could make your own too.

Thanks Jerry. It's PLA+, which is what I use for 95% of my prints. Either Esun or Duramic, more so the latter due to the price of Esun now.

Max OAL is 61.15 mm or 2.40" which I think will accommodate pretty much everything 223/556.
 
If shooters go with the heavies beyond 80gr, longer internal will be helpful.... but is a great design and congrats on designing it.

If I ever get an Axis or Savage, I will bug you for the print rifles.
